I have never decorated a home before, but Monday my husband and I are closing on a new home, I just realized I'm totally inept at decorating. So what would you suggest I do for ideas? Help!!!

I would suggest getting some decorating books. Also, get some magazines and clip out things you like and totally dislike.. write about each one and what parts you like and don't like. Do you like patterns? Do you like rich wood colors? Are you more into modern styles or classic? Do some research online too. Go to amazon and read reviews on the different decorating books. I just bought decorating for dummies, so far it looks really cool. I'm also going to be buying some books on colors and stuff. Good luck!

In England, we have Homes and Gardens Magazine, together with a few others which I can't think of the name of. If you could find such magazines in the States, they might help to set your creative mind working. If you're not keen on sifting through magazines, I have a few website URLs here for you... www.getdecorating.com www.waverly.com www.behr.com www.myinteriordecorator.com Then, if these don't suit you, just type Interior Design and Decorating in your search box and you will have a whole bunch of links you can look into. Good luck with your project. I hope this helps.

Strongly suggest you first get an idea of all the things you really love, that will be part of your home, regardless of decor. That will eliminate anything that clashes, and you can think of any scheme in context with those things. Keep it simple, because you're more likely to be adding things as you go. Decide on your initial layout motif, and budget, so you can't be talked into buying the main set of the "Titanic" for the living room and "Antony and Cleopatra" for the kitchen. (Although the film rights might be worth a bit...) In a new home I'd suggest anything straightforward and easy maintenance. You can avoid committing to a commercial decor scheme pretty easily, and just use the facets you like, to your own tastes. Don't know if you have kids, but if they hate it, there's probably something to hate, and kids have an infallible instinct for fun. Anything decreed lousy by any of the family can be discarded, because someone will have to live with it.
