What is the ideal retirement age?

Reaching my late forties, I naturally join the thought patterns of those about to retire. My reasoning is whether retirement age should be accepted at 55 years just as the law placed it. Can't we retire earlier? Then, the question arises as to whether we are ready to retire or not. Maybe, we are still financially bounded by mortgages, loans, etc. I am interested in what different one of us personally think what is the ideal retirement age. Let's set our own retirement age. With this in mind, maybe we will find it easier to planned how we are going to achieve it. Meaning we know what we ought to do from this time on. So, what is your ideal retirement age? How are you setting yourself up to achieve it?

As long as you are doing something you really enjoy, why retire?

I think it would be nice, I think that some are ready to retire at that age but not all, it should definately be an option to people. 55 Is a great age, I don't think it should be any earlier.

I beg to differ in my view to your opinion. I will give anything to be able to retire earlier. Think of all the great and exciting things you want to do, but do not have the time or finance to do so. Besides, life is very uncertain. Enjoy it when you still can. Thank God for each new day.

I will retire at 55, on April 1st coming. Not that I want to, my health is failing me... So there you go, retiring can be different for every single person. I worked from the age of 17, so I think I've contributed my part. Would have looooved to retire early, when I was healthier, but guess what: no money! Of course I am not going to sit in my windowsill, looking out over the street and be Mme Gossip and Knows It All. On my good days I am a very busy person, on my bad health days I am "simply not there". My husband and I (same age both of us) often discuss an early retirement and go live in the warmth of the south of Europe, but guess what: no money! So we just enjoy life as it is, having a good time together and play it by ear. Who knows... with enough postings on MyLot... LOL

I am not far behind. I'll be 48 this year. There's only my wife and me. We have no children but live a loving life all these years. Money is still a concern as I have yet to complete my house mortgage. However, if I am to carry on my stressful job working almost 10 to 12 hours daily, including sundays, it is not going to do me any good. I am actually quitting my job on April 01st. From there, I'll concentrate on generating multiple streams of income at different levels to keep going financially.

I would like to correct my post in this way. To me retirement means that I longer work for some ungrateful bosses who sucks up all my time and energy. Retirement means the ability to do the things I want. Getting paid does not necessarily mean you still need to work. Think about multiple streams of income. Think about monthly passive income. All these are possible. It's only our mind's limitation that tells us that if we don't work, we don't eat.
