How much do you pay for a nanny or babysitter per hour or per week?

I'm thinking about going back to work at least part time sooner than later. Just wondering what I'm looking at paying.

You'll need to pay at least minimum wage for your state. Generally, if you want a good sitter, I've found you need to pay above the minimum wage by at least 20%. You also need to make the appropriate Social Security payments are made (usually the employer makes half and the employee makes half).

I guess I should say that I live in the DC area and daycare is $1200 a month but I'm hoping to definitely pay less than that

Until I lost my job, we paid a friend $20/day to watch DS (13 months). She had him 7 hrs a day and we provided pretty much everything. She was really great with him. I'm hoping to be able to keep staying home with him though.

Where we live the cheapest you can find daycare is $75 a week, which isn't bad. That is for the lowest program that teaches somethings but doesn't have a cirriculum. Personally, I prefer KinderCare because they have set standards. When I live din Iowa we paid $125/week. In Louisiana it is a little lower per week. If you are going to pay a sitter, you are looking at an easy $9 hour even for a teenager to watch your child. I don't know your montly income, but many areas have a program when you can apply for your daycare to be partially paid for by the government. The child has to be in a certified daycare.

I think it really depends on your location. Where I live it costs about $2 per hour for a babysitter, and $100 a week for daycare. That's the cheapest I've found around here. Most daycares can be up to $150 per week sometimes. It's very outrageous and makes it hard for a single parent to work if they don't have anyone that can help out. Expecially since most jobs here only pay $6.50 per hour (or less).
