What can I do about my husband's teeth?

Ok, I am determined to do something about my husband's teeth.
When I met him first he had already lost about 8 teeth and had a partial denture. In the past few years he has lost another one or two. He drinks soft drinks so its probably because of that and I think that he is not meticulous in the cleaning of his teeth. So now that we have a baby and I am determined that he does not go down the same road as his Dad. I have told my husband that the next time he goes to the dentist I am coming along as I want to ask the dentist what exactly he can do to save the rest of his teeth. Also, we are thinking at some point of getting him dental implants and there is absolutely no point if he is not caring for his teeth right.
So I thought I would ask the other MyLoteers for their views on this as I am going to proceed and it would be best for me to do so with sensitivity as my husband is a bit defensive about this.

My teath have always been really nice when I was a child. I became pregnant when I was sixteen and started developing all sort of problems with them. They kept breaking off and I was told by a dentist that I need to have ten removed. I am twenty-two and don't want to be toothless by the time I am thirty. I want to go to another dentist to get a second opinion though. I think the dentist told me to have them pulled out because I told him that I couldn't afford to have them fixed right now. He said that it was going to cost me a total of about ten thousand dollars to get these fixed completely. The good news is that I will be happy once I can smile again. I haven't smiled in so long because I am self conscience about my teeth. I hate them and can't wait to get them fixed.

It might not be your husband's fault. I lost most of mine not due to not cleaning them or the like but due to fluoride. All growing up I never had a cavity in any of my teeth. I brushed only with baking soda or close up which back then did not have fluoride in it. Then I got braces and I was told I had to brush with fluoride toothpaste. I started getting cavities right away. Even after the braces were off I got them because by then we'd moved and were now in an area with fluoridated water and every toothepaste had fluoride in it. I've since lost most of my teeth.
My sister had the same problem. She brushed 3 times a day with Crest all her life. By 32 she had to have a full set of dentures. The one dentist did say it was probably due to the fluoride.
There are a few toothepastes that do not have fluoride in them. You have to look for them but they do exist or you can use just baking soda, it really whitens the teeth too. It might be something to try and see if it helps. Also make sure he is using a soft toothbrush and not a hard one, the hard can damage the enamel.

Wow I always thought that fluoride is put in the toothpaste to prevent cavities etc. I brushed once a day with fluoride toothpaste and I've onle one filling. Last few years I changed to a non fluoride toothpaste, not because I thought the flouride was damaging my teeth but because fluoride is known to be bad for the brain.
My husband has an EXTREMELY sweet tooth!

Go with him and ask the dentist the alternative things you can do. I am beginning to lose my teeth due to giving birth and getting peridontal disease. Maybe he does take care of his teeth but they are not healthy. Some people are born with bad teeth from their genes they inherited. I want implant, but can not afford them at all! so I will end up with dentures I am sure.

I suppose that some people's genes have an effect. But I can tell you that in my husband's case he does not take such good care of his teeth, cleans them once or twice a day but not for long. More importantly he drinks sugary drinks although I have banned them from the house so only in work.

Not sure what you can do, but I will tell you that my mother had all her teeth removed a couple of weeks ago and now has dentures. They seem to be working quite well for her.

I would suggest looking at having his treatment abroad if you need implants as its very expensive over here in Ireland. Im determined to go to Turkey to have mine done. I ned a bridge and 8 crowns done. Here it would cost €15000.00 In turke it would only be €3000.00. Hubby wont come with me but im working on it!!

I have a partial denture ( 3 teeth) due to illness as a teenager, I got implants priced here at €3000 each, and when I got them price in Enniskillen the dentist told me it would cost about £3000/ 3500 sterling, even with the change over that's no 9 grand so think I'll be heading that way. Although Turkey sounds good. I can smell a holiday coming lol (i wish).
If you want this guys details pm me and I'll pass them on.
