This simply amazes me, that kids these days will not wear coats or jackets. It is below zero out and all they put on is a hoodie and that is it no gloves no hat not even a long sleeve shirt under the hoodie. My kids do this do yours?

This sounds exaclty like a talk I had with my son the other day. It was 50 dgrees outside, wind blowing and he only had his short sleeve school polo shirt on. I asked him why he didn't have a jacket on, he said "I didn't feel like it". So I asked him a few other questions (keep in mind that he is in first grade) and apparently there are quite a few kids that don't wear a jacket when it is really cold out or if they do they take it off when they get to school, and the school doesn't allow outside jackets in the school itself so they don't do anything about it. Well, I went out and got him a school sweatshirt and at least he will wear that. Makes me feel a bit beter.

If they wear an outside jacket they have to take it off as soon as they get inthe school or right before walking in. In my sons classroom there are hooks, last year he hung his jacket on the back of his chair.

I have been harping on my middle school child for doing this. I have even threatened that if he does it one more time, I am going to take over his closet and he will dress according to my dress code! LOL But that was after a month of arguing with him. Now, when I do see him, he is sure to wear his jacket. ha ha :) He knows I am not kidding about me taking over how is dresses. I did it last year to him because he refused to wear a belt and his boxers were constantly showing. Which, even though I didn't like it, I let it slide. Until he got into trouble at school and received detention. And to top it off...he received another detention while in detention! So, I knew it was because of the kids he was hanging out with. We had just moved here and he was trying to fit in with a group of kids. Well, I took over his dress code. ha ha He hated it! The rule still stands this year, he must wear a belt and if he dresses all EMO, I will take over what he wears to school. And now...the jacket. It seems to work well!

My kids try to do this but they know mama is smart enough to catch them. I know it is a pain to wear a big, bulky winter coat but the fact of the matter is, it is necessary. It is also considered child neglect to let your child run around in below zero weather without adequate clothing. I tell them they better wear their coats unless they want someone to call DHS and drag them off to a foster home! HAHAHA I am such a mean mom! How dare I make them dress warmly! lol

It is so confusing to me. My youngest son was out shoveling the porch yesterday with no gloves and a hoodie and no socks and yes with the wind chill it was like -10. It is so crazy

I had to laugh at this post, because I have gone most of this winter without wearing a winter coat, myself! Whenever I go to my parents' house I have to hear about it. It has been extraordinarily warm this winter, and I do wear the coat when it's cold out (like it has been this week). But I wore a long sleeved shirt with a hoodie or sweatshirt only for most of December and early January! I never wear gloves or a hat, either. I guess that I would be a poor example for the kids!

Why kids won't wear a jacket is beyond me. The reason I don't wear heavy coats is that - its heavy. I wear windbreakers and sweatshirts. I do wear gloves and sometimes a scarf. I think we set examples for our kids ..if we don't wear it they think why should they. I can tell my kids a hundred times to put there coat on they will find something lighter and wear it. So, I guess it is my fault as I do the same thing.

I know what you mean. I see it all the time too. I think that they are trying to be cool or have some kind of image. My son tries to get away with it sometimes, but I tell him to put on his jacket hat and gloves before he leaves the house. He says he doesn't get cold...which is ridiculous to me...when it is snowing and freezing outside!

Yes tey do, and even if you make them put a jacket on, you will find them coming home with the jacket in the bookbag and back to the hoodie. I don't know why.

Kids have a higher metabolism than we older people have. Boys are naturally 10 degrees warmer than girls. As mothers we do not realize this at all. Most young boys do not need the extra clothing unless they are really cold. Plus they do not like having to keep up with the coat if they need to take off inside. that is way too much responsibilty! LOL

You are not alone in the confusion. NOw I know as a kid I would refuse to wear hats or gloves but I always wore a jacket when it was that cold. I see it down here too and we've been getting into the low 30's in the mornings which for tropical Florida is cold. Still I see the kids out there in just a sweat shirt and no jacket. I don't think you can force them to wear one either.

well i think it has to do with fashion and the macho element....thay dont wear all the other stuff because to them it means.....they are being coddled and dressed up by their parent...lol its a phase....usualy practical thinking prevails in a bit of time....which is anywhere between a few months and a couple of years...lol

I remember doing this when I was a kid. It wasn't cool to get all bundled up. I remember going to school in runners and a light jacket on the coldest, snowiest days of the year. I think it's the universal dopey kid thing to do.

This is not a new phenomena. Back in the 60's when I was a teen, it was considered uncool to zip-up or button your coat, no matter how cold it got. Most kids wore them, but they aren't much use unless they are zipped up. Maybe kids nowadays think it is uncool to even wear a jacket. I think it is a "fad" of some kind. Kind of like a rebellion against authority (parents).

I must be a teenager at heart. I very rarely where a winter jacket during the winter. I am usually found wearing a polar fleece jacket, often undone with nothing more then a tshirt. If it is really cold I might add a lightweight sweater buts thats about it. I just don't feel the cold...

Kids do this to show off. It is kind of like street cred. If you know what I mean. They try to act "big"
