What is the most unusual pet you had and why did you select it?

I had a pair of chinchillas someone was giving away. I was trying to teach my daughter responsibility about pets and thought it would be easier to teach her about caring for caged animals (typically they were not loose at home). I agreed to take them for a woman who did not have the ability to care for them anymore and she was giving the entire set up away for free! How about you?

I think the most unusual pet I've ever had has to be my dwarf frogs (although I did have hermit crabs at one point). I just find the frogs are so cute to watch. I'd love to be able to pick them up, haha, but I can't. I've had many pets in my lifetime but I think these have provided me with the most entertainment and they are really easy to take care of.

Hi scorpiobabes, I think the most unusual pet I had was a duck, it was when I was 15 and we had a small pond in our back garden that had fish in it, but I wanted something that was a bit more exciting, so we brought a duck. They're great pets! I've also had rats and ferrets along with the usual dog, cats, hamsters and tropical fish.

Did your duck go after your ankles? My aunt kept ducks, geese and chickens, which would chase my sister and I and peck at our ankles. Stuart was her 'guard goose'--his wings were broken, but he could run almost as fast! (and he'd snap at you too!)

I have two ferrets. They are a great pet. They are easy to take care of. In the summer time we take them out for walks.

I won't ever get one; my sister and her boyfriend had a ferret with one short leg (they'd adopt anything at this pet store that had no chance, so they had a menagerie!). I didn't mind it at first, but then they put it one my belly (I was 8 months pregnant at the time) and when the baby kicked, it naturally disturbed the ferret (who was sleeping at that point). The ferret did what it would do when provoked and it bit my tummy! My daughter thinks it funny, but I'm not interested in trying that again (pregnancy or petting ferrets!)

That's ok--what kind of lizards did your friends have? My friend's daughter likes lizards, so she got a tiny one (I'd know what it was if I was at the pet store!) that hasn't grown much. I knew someone with a chameolon (sp?) and one time it shed it's tail, so it became our show 'n tell one day at school (we were pretty young!)

My kids and I used to have a couple of ferrets, they were great fun. We could take them almost anywhere and they would be the life of the party. We also had a hedgehog for years. She got old and passed away. Hedgehogs are very easy as you don't have to do a whole lot for them except for cleaning and feeding. As for holding and cuddling they are not that much fun as they get really poky if they don't like you or know you.

I never knew you could keep a hedgehog--how did you acquire it? And how long do they live? Chinchillas live to be about 18, so obviously this was a responsibility that my daughter (a tween at this point) wasn't ready to accept.

What kind of snake did you have? I knew someone long ago that had a snake, I think it might have been a boa.
