Some good ones that haven't been mentioned--
A Beautiful Mind- fascinating story of a brilliant mathematician fighting mental illness
X or Malcom X- Denzel Washington does a great job telling the story of the controversial Black Muslim leader
Gandhi- Ben Kingsley's Oscar-winning role as the man who used nonviolence to battle the British Empire and achieve independence for India. Great historical epic, along the lines of...
Lawrence of Arabia- the compelling portrait of the complex Briton who sought to shape the postwar Arab world

Stone(d) with Brian Jones from the rolling stones. It gives you a fantastic view at the end of the sixties, you really feel into the movie. The music is offcourse fantastic and the movie is great (I've shown him to people who are not fans of the rolling stones or brian jones and they thought it was brilliant to!)

Movies of this genre i can think of now which i have already seen are..
1. Cinderella Man, which is about heavyweight boxer James Braddock. It's a story of success turned into a miserable life and getting up again. Braddock was featured in the movie as the representation of the poor man going up against seemingly insurmountable odds. The movie also showed the viewers how difficult life was during the Great Depression, and how a man who barely eats 4 square meals a day can have so much strength going into a fight motivated by the thought that his earnings will feed his own starving family.
2. Lords of Dogtown, i saw this one on cable TV. it's about teen surfers who shifted to skateboarding and became icons of the sport.
3. Space Jam.. LOL! i think this can be treated as falling in this genre considering that excerpts of the movie features Michael Jordan growing up in the sport that has become synonymous to his name.

"Wilde," a film about the life of Oscar Wilde is wonderful. I've also heard that the new Beatrice Potter movie is really good.
