Why my personal site can't make money. If it could how nice it would be...

I have this little subdomain over at piczo. I chose piczo at the time because it seemed easy. I have some google ads and they don't make much. I have tried applying for affiliations, without acceptance. Now, I realize that it is likely due to my low traffic. Still, there has got to be a way to make a little somethin' with my site. I'd like it to go independent. I need it to pay for its self though. Any ideas are so greatly appreciated. My lil site is over at www.modernpioneers.piczo.com Should I have used like geocities to start out on? Anyway, thank you for any ideas.
