Guinea Pigs!!! It seems I'm out numbered right now. But if you would see my 2 new babies that I have, you'd pick them over the other two! They are adorable and they DON'T STINK!!!!! As for the comment made about them being "not as much money" that's not right. I'm telling you, I probably have spent more on my now 6 guinea pigs than I ever did on the ferrets that I've owned. It's nothing against the ferrets, but it's true. I have had 1 baby in critical health and am nursing him back to health. He's doing really good and he knows that I'm mama, but I've spent more money on them than my ferrets. I don't have ferrets anymore and probably won't ever get anymore either. But that's just choice.

I agree with you - Ferrets are so cute but they reek. Even people who have them that bathe them and have some scent gland removed - they still stink. It's too bad. I love Chinchilla's. My uncle used to raise them. They're adorable. It makes me so angry to hear rappers rap about chinchilla coats. I'd throw paint on them if I saw them.

I don't think they smell bad. they just smell.
it's musky and a bit like bonfires. not really an unpleasant smell if it's a clean ferret in a clean enclosure.
you can't get rid of the smell, but I don't think its a bad smell. just a smell. part of what a ferret is.
and they have such a great sense of humour and fun. one of the best games is sweeping them up with a broom. they chuck at you and bounce away, then back for another go.

I'd pick guinea pigs, but I'm biased. ;)
I've been rescuing guinea pigs since 2002 and have had them as pets since 1995.
We can't have ferrets here as they are illegal, but I did like the ones that came into the animal hospital I worked at. And I've seen some that various rescuers own.
Chinchillas are cute, but I've never fostered one yet (although, I suppose that I could). I'm always afraid they'll run too quickly and escape or something. Plus, they live like 20 years and I'm not ready for that kind of commitment to add an extra pet to the household (I've already got two rabbits!).
I guess I like guinea pigs most as I'm most familiar with them.

I've never had a chinchilla so I can't really comment on them but they do look rather cute. Guinea pigs are nice, but my last one was super loud at night and hated everyone but me. I lived with someone that had a ferret and she was really sweet and the smell wasn't all that bad actually. I'd probably have to pick ferrets overall. But given another choice I'd pick a female rat above them all!

ferrets.
they're really great fun. really playful and interactive. they're also pretty sturdy and healthy. I think much better for children than a guinea pig as they can be a bit on the fragile side for a more boistrous child. but a ferret will bounce back for more and find it a great game.
and they're just gorgeous.
the smell is an aquired taste, but it's not a bad smell. just a smell.

Chinchillas are adorable, but I've never actually had one. I have had ferrets and guinea pigs, and both had their advantages. Guineas are easier to care for and maybe a little less messy. They also make that adorable "whirring" noise when they're content.
But ferrets, while they are more work to keep clean and happy and do have that "weasely" smell, are so very entertaining! There's nothing like a ferret (or two or three or four) bouncing around in the middle of a weasel war dance.
So I'd pick ferrets any day of the week.
