Reading Religion

I find reading about religion fascinating, mainly from a historical and philosophical point. I like to read across all religions and view points, anyone got any recommended reading for me?

Awaken the Buddha Within - excellent book
One book I absolutely loved and love is Awaken the Buddha Within by Lama Surya Das....Actually I have so far really enjoyed all the books by him that I've read...Awaken was the first one I read a few yrs back and I've reread it a few times actually....heres a little write up from B&N on it"Awakening the Buddha Within offers a complete yet accessible understanding of the unique Buddhist teachings embodied in the traditional Noble Eight-Fold Path and its Three Enlightenment Trainings, common to all schools of Buddhism:Wisdom Training: Developing clear vision, insight, and inner understanding—seeing reality and ourselves as we really are. Ethics Training: Cultivating virtue, self-discipline, integrity, and compassion in what we say and do. Meditation Training: Practicing mindfulness, concentration, and awareness of the present moment. This fresh and original work illuminates such key principles as karma (what we do does matter), rebirth(every moment is an opportunity to start afresh), letting go (simplifying our lives by clarifying our hearts and minds), as well as conscious living and dying, and Dzogchen, the ultimate, mystical teaching of Tibet."

"Awakening the Buddha Within" is very good with both intellectual and practical information.

Earlychristianwritings.com is a fantastic website. It covers all the basics of Christian writing, including the works of the Gnostics and the Gospels that were omitted from the Bible. I also love religion. I follow Buddism, hinuism, and various pagan religions.

I am so glad to see some one with this kind of interest. Welcome to come the club (This is one of my most favourite hobby). I would recommend "History of God". Even though this book doesn't cover Eastern philosophy, it is a good book on Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Since I am from East, I already knew a lot about eastern philosophy, so this book added lot of material to my mind on these 3 religions and that is also devoid of any biasis. Material is presented pretty much from historic perspective.

A couple of good ones are "Christianity: A Global History" by David Chidester and "The Path to Freedom" by the Dalai Lama. A more humorous book is "The Accidental Buddhist" by Dinty W. Moore.
