I don't agree with your 2nd line where you said that defragmenting is not needed.I think we should defragment our harddrive to kepp the speed up.

You should defrag your computer often. If you havent done it yet you really should. How often you should do it depends on how much deleting and installing is done on the computer. I am a computer technician and I use my computer for work. Because I quite often have a customer's hard drive hooked to my computer for various reasons, I have 5 physical harddrives installed for backups etc. I defrag 1 hard drive every day. The more often you defrag the computer the less time it will take to do it. If you have never done a defrag, it will take a long time, but you really should do that. Here is a link explaining what defragmenter does and how to do it. www.compuking.us/defragmenter.html

I don't really defragment my HD unless I notice that it's running really really slow. But it is always a good practice to defragment your drive. When you defrag your PC, it puts all your programs closer in the HD instead of being scattered all over. This makes reading & writing faster. So nothing bad will happen if you want to defrag you PC more frequently.

Thanks my friend for such a wonderfull explaination about defragmentation.Yes it's a good idea to practise doing it in regular interval.I do it twice in a month if necessary, otherwise once in a month if I have no time in hand.

I don't do it often, just sometimes when I remember to do so but it takes a lot of time, that's the main reason why I don't use it much.

well i usuallly do not defrag system ! but then also i do so in 2-3 months span of time !! about defragment : Reading and writing data on a heavily fragmented file system is slowed down as the time needed for the disk heads to move between fragments, and waiting for the disk platter to rotate into position, is often fatal to throughput (see seek time and rotational delay). For many common operations, the performance bottleneck of the entire computer is the hard disk; thus the desire to process more efficiently encourages defragmentation. Operating system vendors often recommend periodic defragmentation in order to keep disk access speed from degrading over time. Fragmented data also spreads over more of the disk than it needs to. Thus one may defragment in order to compact data storage before splitting a single partition into two or more partitions (for example, with GNU Parted, or PartitionMagic).

I recommend to my customers that they defrag at least once a month. I also suggest to them that they defrag even if the analyze button says it is not necessary. I personally defrag more often than that, because I do a lot of deleting and adding in my work. Some people use the excuse that it takes too long. That is kind of a poor excuse, because everyone has to sleep once in a while. It doesnt need babysitting, just start it and go to bed. haha

I regularly perform some functions on my computer. They include disk defragmentation, disk cleanup, virus scan and creating system restore points. I also have installed ccleaner which i use frequently to keep my computer clean. Surely these activities help me keeping my computer speed high and processing speeds great

That's not good for your PC.It'll become slower in action if you don't remember to defragment it.Thanks for your response.

Defragmenting your HDD is a harmless operation, you can do it as often as you want. However, since it's a time comsuming operation, it's best to do a analysis before you defragment your harddrive, the system being able to indicate if there's any need for defragmenting or not. Good luck!

Thank you sir for your information.I use a software called "Perfectdisk".It works automatically and shut down your p.c. after the defragmentation is complete.

It's not really a problem if you want to defragment your hard drive twice a month since defragmenting your hard drive makes your p.c. to run faster and smoother and also save you some free spaces, so it's just ok for you to defrag you hard drive twice a month, actually I defrag my harddrive very often since I have so many things to attend to and I don't have enough time to defrag my p.c. but thanks to my core duo processors i don't think it is necessary for me to do it =)

Defragmenting your hard drive is such a good idea because it speeds up your computers my eliminating the "blanks" between your programs. That is, grouping your programs together and arranging them according to each type. Defragmentation allows your programs to become easily accessible when they are called for, which means for faster download time. Think of it as a distance between two points. If before fragmentation the time needed to download the program is from point a to point b, after fragmenting it the program is moved by about half the distance, which makes for faster downloads. Generally, it is a good idea to fragment your hard drive at the end of every month, but you can do it more often if your harddrive is almost full or you have a lot of programs installed. I hope this explains it a bit.

Defragmenting ur hard drive is a good thing, it does boost performance. Defraging too many times is useless. once a moth is fine.

theres no harm in defragmenting your drives always. Especially if you have install or uninstall so many programs in your system. The only set back in defragmenting is it really sometimes takes time if your drive have so many fragmented files.

I always defragment my hard disk once a day, then there is no problem with my computer. I think if we always defragment our hard disk, it's can make our computer run normally.

I defrag mine about that much. I usually run disk cleanup first. defragmenting puts all the file back into order such as most used in front and least in back. It dosen't hurt to run it.
