I think many high schools have dress codes because some people abuse the privelege when there isn't one. If the school doesn't have a code enforced, then it makes it difficult for them to claim someone is not dressed appropriately. I went to a high school where we had to wear uniforms. We all hated it too but it was actually a good idea. One tends to focus more on homework rather than what to wear to school.

When I was younger, I strongly opposed dress codes. There was a movement to make uniforms mandatory in all Massachusetts public schools, and as a fourth-grader, I was repulsed by the idea. However, as a current senior in high school, looking back on my last six or so years in the school, I think that the uniforms would have helped in several ways. Groups of people would not be categorized by their clothes, as they are now. No one would have to worry about not being able to afford fashion, which is more expensive than I ever would have imagined before I had to purchase it for myself. And people would have learned how to appropriately dress in a somewhat formal setting. That last point wasn't something I really noticed until our school dress code (not uniforms at all - more about not being allowed to wear strapless shirts and such) was fought against by a group of girls. They were protesting specifically the 1" strap rule. And that made me look at them a little differently - sure, they're free to wear strapless shirts, but that is truly inappropriate for school. When they are out in the working world, I really hope that someone will have taught them the limits of socially acceptable dress. I hope the boys will put away their chains and pull up their pants a little, too. But who will have taught them? The very lenient parents of my town? The school that caved under pressure to remove that line from the dress code? It worries me a bit.
