i was watching Blood Diamond last weekend and was moved with how the people in that part of Africa struggled with life. a diamond with a size smaller than a pebble could be equal to one man's life or more. then there were child soldiers who,at their young age, were already experts with guns, instead of playing with toys. how could some people find it very easy to take away the life/lives of others? it was as if life could just be ended with a push of a button or a flick of a switch. could they still sleep at night? is man by nature good? or man really has the tendency to do both good and bad?

I watched the film and gained insights on what man's nature truly is. Many of those theories would conclude that man, by nature, is bad. How then could they justify acts of love and justice that most impoverished people manifest? I believe that the good in man is his true nature. that something within him allows him to change all the external forces such as poverty and depression. in the film, the RUF leader dismissed Sierra Leone as 'hell.' In verbatim, he says "do you think i'm bad? i'm only bad because i'm in hell." that would give us an impression that he can no longer change what the external world brought upon him. He succumbed to poverty and violence and sees his struggle as "unchangeable" so he never had a chance of not tolerating his criminal act. The nature of man, the good in him, sees these external forces as a challenge that are possible to conquer. The good in him allow the man to change those external forces rather than the other way around. The finest example of this would be Mr. Solomon Vandy and his son. His son had succumbed to the tortures inflicted in him as a child soldier. His son even attempted to kill him despite all the good things that he had provided for his son. But Mr. Vandy believed that deep within him was a human being capable of revealing his true nature. Mr. Vandy believed in the goodness of his own son and by letting him remember his past dreams, his son had made a reversion. The message is clear. If we only believe in the goodness of the human being, that, later on, would truly manifest. All of these rests on the premise of our dignity as a human person. And in that dignity, the image of the Good Supernatural Being reveals Itself.
