Why are London Policemen called "BOBBIES" and American Policemen called "COPS" or "COPPERS"?

I've heard the Robert Peel explanation mentioned above for Bobbies. As for U.S.cops, I had always heard that it was because they wore copper buttons on their uniforms.

I do not know exactly why they are that way. I just think it is the tradition that they came up with and still here today.
