My son, Xavier, is 2 yrs old. He hasn't been sick before now. Well yesterday, he came back from his fathers and it was only a moment before I noticed he was not well. I fgured he was still a little under the weather since he did seem like he was coming down with something when he had left to his dads on Fri. But with a closer look or (smell) rather, I found that this was much more than the common cold. I am not kidding when I tell you that the smell was something like...death..or decomposing animal or...do you get it? AWFUL. I felt hi head, he was a little warm. I took my son into brush his teeth, thinking he did need to do that, at least. As I attempted to go into his mouth he pushed me away. That isnt normal, he enjoys brushing his teeth. I am going to do it anyway because this smell is not right. So I brush a little as he fights me. Then suddenly, blood is coming out of his mouth! I was not being rough or brushing hard...I look into his mouth- HIS BACK TEETH ARE COMPLETELY COVERED BY RED IN-FLAMED GUMS!!! What the heck is the problem??? I have to take him into the emergency room at childrens hospital, this is wrong, something is wrong. Anyway, we go in and luckily they take us immediately. The dr looks in his mouth, and after I answer a couple questions, he says he is worried. He saw a little girl the night before with the same condition. Is this a new virus we need to worry about? He takes a culture from Xaviers mouth. Comes back and says he has HERPES!!! Not sexually transmitted kind, but un-cureable just the same. My son had caught a virus, developing into a viral infection. The infection was attacking his system, which in small children, normally develops into another infection, which is the herpes virus. Actual name- herpes gingivostomatitis. It is a very uncomfortable sickness. He is very much in pain. He has sores around his mouth, we have to fight with him not to pick the sores, as they are itchy. Those same sores are the ones inside of his mouth causing the in-flamed gums and bleeding. He still has the fever. He is on the verge of being dehydrated, since he has no desire to drink or eat. Even with the desire, it is too painful for him to have to use his mouth. Has anyone experienced this illness? Do you have any advice. Also, with the medication- he has 2. Amoxicillin, an anti-biotic, for the viral infection. And Acyclovir, for the herpes. He is very serious about not taking these medications. I have never had such a diffcult time. Please, if you can help... Xavier and I would really appreciate it. Thanks
