It broke my heart to hear that on the news today. He has been such a grand horse with so much heart. He was so beautiful winning the Kentucky Derby. All these months of the surgeries and critical - I was really hoping he would beat the odds. Here's a link to story about it: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070129/ap_on_sp_ot/rac_barbaro

That is so terribly sad. Like the derby isn't horse abuse the way it is. I hope the gamblers choke on their betting cards.

Unfortunately life isn't as important as money to some people. It's sick.

How exactly are race horses abused? They are better taken care of than most folks children. I know as I worked in the industry for many years. I loved every horse in my care and never abused them along with many other good people I knew.

Yes, it was so sad to hear that Barbaro had been euthanized. What a story huh? No doubt he'll go down in horse racing history as one of the greats. I imagine one day there will even be a movie made about Dr. Dean Richardson, his team at Penn State's Bolton Clinic, and the Horse that tried so hard to live. Problem is...how do you make the movie have a happy ending. Maybe Barbaro helped them make some advances in equine medicine. Does anyone know which horse farm Barbaro was raised on? Will he be buried there? You captured our hearts Barbaro. Cheers to ya!

I don't remember what farm he was raised on. I want to say the Jacksons are his original owners, but am not sure. They haven't decided where he's going to be buried yet. He has a 2 year old half brother (different sire, same dam) that will be racing this year. They also have a full brother to Barbaro coming this spring.

It definitely made me sad to hear about Barbaro being put to rest yesterday as he was such a beautiful horse and very talented and strong. I can not imagine all the pain and suffering Barbaro went through with the surgeries and the injury he suffered from his last race. This is why I do not like horse racing because once a horse gets seriously injured they put them to rest. It looked like he would beat the odds but just couldn't do it. He would probably still be alive and well if it were not for horse racing, as well as many other horses.

I know, I too was rooting for Barbaro to heal. My little neice will be so heartbroken. She loves horses and is so tenderhearted toward animals. He must have been in bad shape if the owner's decided to euthanize him. Still a very sad day for horse lovers.

I appreciated how the owners kept trying with him. Everytime they showed new photos of Barbaro he always looked comfortable. He never looked like he was in pain or suffering. Yes, he must've been bad to put him down. I expect this last effort to try to get the weight off the right foot because of the deep abcess just didn't work and was too painful for him coupled with the laminitis on the left hind. Poor guy.

everyone really feels heartbroken to read abt it but it becomes a compulsion for a vet and it is really justifiable to put a animal to permanent sleep than allowint to suffer chronically
