They finally put Barbaro The Kentucky Derby winner The race hose to sleep. He had a lot of ailments including laminitis in the left rear hoof, an abscess in the right rear hoof, as well as new laminitis in both front feet He underwent several procedures and was fitted with fiberglass casts. He spent time in a sling to ease pressure on his legs, had pins inserted and was fitted at the end with an external brace. He was doing pretty good when He developed an abscess. He had already lost 80% of his hoof.. This horse has been through a lot. It is unusual to do so much to try to save a horse. Do you think they did the right thing? I do. The poor horse was just getting worse and suffering a lot. I think it was time to let him go.

I think it would have been far more cruel to let Barbaro go on as he was. We always had a saying on the farm: never love your animal so much you can't do the right thing for it. They tried to do the right thing, but the poor animal should not have to spend his last days in pain stuck in a sling. This is not what they mean by putting an old horse out to pasture, Barbaro didn't even have the pleasure of going out to pasture. I think they did the right thing in the end.

From what I understand he was feeling pretty good and they were planning more surgery and this morning he just didn't look good, so they let him go.
