hierarchy among pets?

I read from somewhere that pets take on certain behavior patterns from whoever is the higher being (in most cases of course, humans). This could be true because my family has cats (multitudes!) and dogs. The cats grew up in a special area in our backyard with the mother dog. The rest of the dogs (three of them) would sometimes get in the house or stay in another area (separate dog houses). What is funny is that the cats started acting like the mother dog, and the dogs are starting to behave like humans! Actually, one time when I got back from work, I thought it was my mom seated in the living room watching TV--but it was actually one of our big dogs!
