What is the absolute worst survival situation you've been in? I mean, was it a natural disaster or a social uprising or what? Did you learn anything? If you had to deal with it again, what would you have on hand?

That's really neat to hear. It's great when you have that much spirit of good in people.

One of my earliest memories takes place during Los Angeles riots of...uh...1991? 1992? Don't remember. Anyway, we lived across the street from UCLA at the time, and had a patio on the roof of our house. My dad took me up onto the roof, and just told me to watch the smoke and remember what was happening. It left a huge impression. I was never in any danger, but that sight...the smoke curling over Downtown LA...was really powerful.

Yeah, that would have been an interesting place to be at the time.

This might sound pathetic (especially coming from a former Marine and all) but the worst situation I've been in was back in '97 when a hurricane ripped through Coastal North Carolina. My friends and I lived in a condo on an island and we were all evacuated. We refused to be corralled in one of the shelters so all 4 of us hid in the game warden shack because it had backup electricity and showers. PMO saw us sitting outside drinking and we were thrown into a Humvee and taken to the shelter. We snuck (is that a word?) back out almost immediately in the full-force storm and made our way back to the shack lol. We were let back onto the island a week later after the debris was mostly-cleared. Our hotel was fine but the dunes were wiped out. People who had houses on wooden stilts were trashed. Intense...I know. :P

I have always had stage fright. I really hate speaking in front of a group of people except my students. Whenever I am given a task to speak in front I feel like like running away. I think I'd rather die a thousand deaths than lead a discussion. It's really killing me. and then when I'm giving explanations I always get aphasic--can't find the right words. My mind is sharp and in the right track but my mouth is not as fast as my brain. Can't articulate well and I often stop in the middle of a sentence because words won't come out of my mouth. There is always apprehension that I might say the wrong thing. I have had dealt with it at least once a year and never have found the right formula. guess am not really made for speaking in front of many people. Give me other tasks that don't require speaking and I would do very well.

I know you're not expecting this kind of answer. but asked for survival from 1. natural disaster, 2. social uprising, 3. or what....So my answer fell on number 3. For me speaking before a group is a survival situation. I had been to survival camps and survival hiking but they are things I could avoid whereas speaking is not.

It's ok. It was still a very good answer. For many people that is. I met a woman today that was speaking in front of a small group and I could tell she was terrified. But she worked through it and did very well.
