Who Are The Best Driver's. Women Or Men?

January 29, 2007 9:35pm CST
I do not drive myself, but I have had the experience of being a passenger with both a woman and a man driver. Personally, I feel women get a rough deal from men on the roads, especially my poor mum who is of a mature age and a woman. My partner likes to fill a gap when he drives which does not make for a pleasant journey either and he is quite abusive to anyone who takes their time on the road. So who is the better driver?

I have cursed my fair share of equal numbers of both sexs on the roads. Therefore I honestly beleive both male and female drivers are horrible.

Yea. I agree... there are some bad female drivers and there are some bad man drivers. I believe that a good way of measure what gender is the worst, you could see the statistics of accidents.. I am an insurance adjuster, an in the 100% of my cases, in the 63% the there are driviving women involved, in the 31 % there are driving men involving, the other 6% its undefined.

Wow that is a high percentage of women. In the UK women are often given cheaper insurance after a certain number of years as the statistics say women have fewer accidents. Thanks for the information.

We do not see much women driver in India, so, can't really compare between the two. But I can imagine the situation that I am a passenger of a car driven by a women. No, not really convincing.

Personally I think both. I mean there are probably some men and women both who are very careful and pay attention to the road. And then again there are probably a % of both who are careless and don't pay attention. So actually it can be either way.

Exactly. Thanks to everyone who has responded. It has shown me how many of you are kind and non-judgemental. Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are good and bad in every group of people, be it a nation, a city, a trade, a profession, a club or anything else. There are good drivers and bad drivers. There are good women drivers and bad; and good men drivers and bad. I think a bad natured or show-off type or someone who thinks he/she has to prove something will be a reckless driver. A pleasant natured, well adjusted, more mature (not necessarily older) person will have respect for other road users (and themselves) and drive more sensibly. While as a woman, I like to think that women make the best drivers, I really don't think anyone can say that as a factual, provable, statement, although I have seen statistics in motor magazines which would support it. I have been driving for over fifty years and have never had an accident (except for the time a car ran into mine when I was parked). In that time I would have averaged more than 30,000kms a year. Possibly some man out there can equal or beat that, so it doesn't prove anything.

It's like the old saying (modified) Patience is a virtue: possess it if you can. ALWAYS found in woman: NEVER found in man.

Thats one I will defineatly have to remember the next time my partner has a rant. Cheers!!

Wow that is a great record to have. I can only go by what I see as a passenger, as I do not drive and I must admit when I am in the car with a woman, men do tend to try and intimidate women, compared to when I'm in a car with a male driver. Over here womens insurance is lower as they have less accidents. But then they do not tend to become racing drivers when they get behind the wheel!!LOL

I'd say it really just depends on the person. Some people, be it male of female are better drivers than others and some are worse. There are some guys out there who drive bad, and some women out there who drive worse. I'd say the women are the worse drivers as men are genetically superior (as the Y chromosome clearly states). Men are just better over all. At everything. Especially driving. And making topics. And dominating the world. Heh, just kidding. I'd say its equal.

Very cheeky, you nearly had me going then. I enjoy sarcasm and you are so right. If it weren't for men us women would not have any good role models to look up too. lol Thanks for your comments.

it depends on the person obviously, but on the whole i think men tend to be better drivers because they are more confident and comfortable in a car, however the worst drivers are also men (those stupid boy racers that drive around at stupid speeds and inevitably crash). Women tend to be less technically astute as men but more sensible

Boy racers are such a hazzard on the roads. A stretch of road I often go along has so many flowers laid along it from the amount of boy racers being killed by their wreckless driving. Complete madness and a waste of life. Thanks for your comments.

I had to accident in my life, the first a drunk woman hit my car so hard that I end a hospital with an acute back and neck pain the other was a woman that was reversing and hit my car with her big GM pickup truck, am no saying woman are bad driver but my experience tells me all. I also has several close to accidents with some mens to.

To be honest, I feel more safer in a car when I drive. My husband is fair but my dad, oh my gosh...He drives sooo close to people, I just know that we'd be in a wreck if any of them had to stop suddenly. So I feel between the two, women drive better. Of course there are dangerous women drivers but still...

I think both can be a better driver. This is for the reason that the driving skills can be acquired through better practice. The more driving mileage you have the better you are. So, to know who's better, depends upon one's driving experience and a function of how many mileage he or she already drive. Also, age is one of the factor. As we aged in life, our observation skills subside a bit. For this reason, younger drivers could perhaps response well to any driving situations than older drivers. But this case, is not true as always for their are also old drivers who can still drive vehicles very well. As long as you are experienced to quickly adapt to lots of driving situations, your observation skills are refreshed and quicker as they are, and you follow traffic rules and regulation, then you can be a Best Driver. Enjoy driving, and drive safely.

Sensible words. It does depend on a drivers experience. Thanks for your insight.

you gotta go with men on this one because when men drive they drive with an agression that i dint think women have. also i think that men have a better focus on driving than women do. i know when i drive i just get a feeling like i am the best driver in the world and who can trust to get you somewhere on time even though you are running late? you know the answer.

I think I do. My partner is in competition with Michael Schumacher most days!!

I am going to sound very sexist here, but i think women are the more careful of the drivers, where as guys seem to be more likely to speed and show off, but having said that im sure there are women drivers out there too that a bad drivers
31 Jan 07
Fair comment. We have different views depending on our own experiences. This is not being sexist at all. Thanks for your insight.

I also experienced as a passenger to both a woman and a man driver. I feel comfortable and relax with the man driver. Once I ride a woman driver and I almost got a heart attack since she breaks too fast.
31 Jan 07
I know what you mean. I often slam on the invisible pedal when I have been in these situations. It can be quite a hair raising experience. Cheers!!
31 Jan 07
Oh man.. I'd have to say men. Not that women can't drive well but i've personally seen more females make mistakes while driving than i have men. (not counting teen joy riders) Personally it's hard to choose if you want to stay nutual sides. (my wife at my side right now) :) ~Joey

I suppose it does depend on the experiences you have had. I do feel sorry for my mum though. Even though she is a good driver she does get harrassed by many male drivers who think, when they see an older women she is not capable of driving to their standard. Most of the time she hates driving and I feel nervous for her when I am a passenger. To everyone out there please respect the older women. Thanks for your comments!!

I think gender really doesn't have much to do with it. There are good and bad drivers of both.

i think that depends.coz there are great lady drivers as well.i think it has been a general assumption that men are better drivers than women since men are more in to cars.they are more interested and attached to it compared to women.men tend to better arrogant and abusive especially if they noticed that the car next to them is driven by a lady.they tend to overtake and sometimes cut the next car.and that happened to me a couple of time and mind u they never allowed them to get away with it.i really run after these guys, cut and stops right in front of their vehicle.i make sure that they'll learn to respect lady drivers next time.so it doesn't necessarily follow that men are better than women.i know lots of great lady drivers and i can say that they are a lot better compared to some men drivers that i know of.

I dont drive.. I think this is quite hard to answer as I would say my mum is a safe steady driver. but If someone who likes going fast gets stuck behind her they would say she drives too slow so could be a danger to others. My other half drives fast which i also like as I like to arrive at my destintion as quickly as possable. I hate long car journeys! I feel he is safe as his reactions are quick and he has been driving many years never having an accicent. But mum would say he drives to fast so could be a danger to others! So I dont really think there is an answer to this,I think women sometimes drive safer but men are more in control so drive better.. does that make sence?
30 Jan 07
Perfect sense. I feel the same most of the time until my other half has a spout of road rage and then I prefer being in the car with my mum, where the air is not so blue. Thanks for responding to my latest discussions. I have enjoyed reading your comments.

Well it depends. Men r more daring than most women. So if u want some real excitement while driving them i guess the men r better. But 4 a peacful ride i would say definitly a women.

I think that's obvious.Men are better than women.Women are a danger, and men make more attention to the drive.

i'm sorry but i completely disagree.though men tend to drive faster, men also tend to meet more accidents.this is because men are arrogant and abusive when it comes to driving.we're not asking who's getting more attention but if this will be the question,i believe that if women drivers would drive with windows down, definitely attention will be on us.attention given to guys are mostly to give negative feedback like being a reckless driver but when women are given the attention, most of the time it's more on positive feedbacks.i'm sorry guys didn't mean anything.i'm just stating a fact.
