I have suffered from depression and I think reall most people do at one point in their life or another. I have found that watching Funny Movies Reading Funny Books Finding thigs to Laugh About Talking to friends can help with depression. Sometime you have to resort to medication to help you if you have had major stressess in your life but humor really will help . Also stay active. Go out even if you have to force yourself to. Does anyone else have any ideas that have helped them

I definitely second the going out. There is nothing worse than staying inside and allowing yourself to wallow when you're depressed. I have found that my depressive thoughts will just totally consume me if I don't find a distraction. Taking classes has really helped me... even just online ones through the local community college. It gives my mind something productive to focus on (sometimes work doesn't cut it, if you know what I mean). Exercise can be key but it's hard to get started. Very rewarding if you can push yourself past the initial resistence.

absolutely. Even if you just go to the store or to the mall. A movie. I think classess is a great idea. It gets you around other people. Surrounding yourself with people is a great way to help get your thoughts off of your depression.

what do you mean by depression? Do you mean a 'depression' that a doctor has diagnosed and prescribed antidepressants? Or do you mean, just feeling low, and not the medical term called 'depression'. you may find information worth billion dollars if you 'ask the expert' at www.mydoctortells.com jan.30, 2007 love drashok

Gee, I was prescribed anti-depressants back in the late 90's for depression due to chronic pain. I guess they figure that I can have the pain but with anti-depressants I wouldn't care. I had surgery I guess 2001, to take care of the pain, it was suppossed to help for 5-10 years. Well I lost my hearing and balance due to the surgery and about 1 1/2 years later the pain came back. Besides that I was living on the edge at work, were they were continuously right sizing. (They never did get it right) and I had a son who was doing his best to become a high school dropout. So we tried some new antidepressants, then in 2005 I lost my job and my insurance and my happy pills. So since then, I have been down to say the least. My dogs help, they are so cute, they always make me smile, comedies help, but nothing major. I really need my pills.

I've been living with depression for as long as I can remember and despite treatment for it there are definitely self-help things like you mentioned that can alleviate some of the depression symptoms. Keeping healthy by eating a good balanced diet and drinking plenty of water is very helpful. Plus, like you said, so can staying active and getting out of the house. I've also found that getting immersed in something I really enjoy like reading, working on the internet or doing something creative like artwork can help get me out of the spiral of depression. Another thing that's very helpful for depression is getting a good night's sleep. This isn't always easy for a lot of people though, but drinking chamomile tea or taking Valerian root (in capsule form) can help a person get to sleep. It definitely seems to work for me.
