Soul cakes were something that we grew up with. We loved helping make them and taking them to neighbors but sadly that tradition has long since died out. In the days of the Samhain celebrations soul cakes were made for those less fortunate; they would come begging for food and in exchange for the sweetbreads and baked treats they would pray for the souls of the dearly departed. Here's my grammies authentic soul cake recipe 5 1/2 cups of all purpose flour (you'll need extra to flour your table) 1/2 cup of sugar 1/2 cup of butter 1 packet of yeast, active is preffered 1 egg 1/2 cup of tap water 2 teaspoons of salt 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 cups of whole milk Once you have prepped the yeast (this is simple, if you don't know how to do this, I will add it in a comment section) add it to the dry ingredients once you have mixed them thoroughly. Yuo can add what ever other flavors you like to the mix but if you want the authentic soul cake, stick with what grammie used. Once you have a solid clump of dough allow it to set and rise; this takes about a half hour. Once you are satisfied with it you can make a large twist loaf from it or divide it into twelve even sized balls. Grammie would sometimes roll the balls out and add a cinnamon and sugar mix to it then roll it back up, sort of like a modern cinnamon roll. You can top it with an egg and butter mix for a brown top or opt to ice it once it comes out of the oven. Soul cakes are an acquired taste, not everyone is going to love them but if you are planning a feast for All Hallows Eve or Samhain, these are great to have on hand.

They are a tasty treat that always reminds me of being a fat little kid, sticky hands and my grammie saying, "Have one more bite dearie" ... LOL
