Coffee-Diabetic?!?

I have heard and read some conflicting satements on Coffee. I have just found out that I am diabetic so I have been searching all over hell to find out about coffee and diabetics. On the American Diabetic Association website and other places I have read that Coffee can actually lessen the possibility of type 2 Diabetes, but my question is...."is coffee good for a diabetic??" I already have the disease so I do not care about the preventitive aspect, I want to know if I can safely have it. My mother a 14 year sufferer says no (but this is the same woman who just reciently found out about pizza not being good), doctor says I don't know, have not talked to the specialist yet, friends say no, some nonmedical websites say yes (in moderation of course), other friends say yes, etc.... So I am confused all to hell and I have a caffien headache to beat all hell. So here I am at my trusted myLot to ask this question... Can I have my coffee since I am diabetic or does it just help lessen the risk of diabeties?!? Any help will be greatly appriciated and if a link can be provided it will be even better! Have a great day!!

As long as you dont have sugar in your coffee it is good for you. Try splenda. It tastes good with coffee. Hypoglycaemia is a characteristic short-term metabolic complication of diabetes. After 72 hours abstinence, ingestion of 250-400 mg caffeine can improve the perception of hypoglycaemic symptoms. My mother is diabetic and I told her to drink coffee.

I thought that Coffee is not good for HYPOglycemia as it increases the body's metabolism and thus burns more sugars. But if it is HYPERglycemia then it seems like it would be good since HYPO is low where HYPER is high. Both are diabetic it is just that one is low and the other is high. I asked my pharmicist and they said they will look into it for mee. Thank you for the post and have a great day!!

Couple things first...Sorry you just found out about the diabetes. That really sucks because I personally know it is hard to give up the things we love so much! And remember, you mom can have pizza...IF she uses those special low carb tortillas. Only 10 carbs for the tortilla and if you put butter on it and stick it under the boiler...it doubles as toast. :) A way of getting around to being able to have bread without the jump of the sugar level. Now, for coffee. In moderation is ok...caffeine speeds up your system. So it will also help to burn off some extra sugar in your system. However, too much and you lower your sugar too fast but are left feel jittery for more than one reason. The way I see it, they have taken away everything I love! No more sweets, donuts, cup cakes, cheese cake, pancakes, waffles, pasta...grrr Lots of meats and veggies. :P And the Splenda takes some getting used to...so, I am not giving up my caffeine. Now, mind you I get my caffiene from tea and diet soda...but there is no way I could give up everything I love! So, go ahead and have your coffee. And then address it with your doctor. As long as you are keeping the sugar level under control and you remember moderation...no troubles my friend Mee. :)

That artificial sweetener garbage!! I cannot stand the taste of it as it leaves a foul taste in my mouth for a long time after I consume it and nothing seems to remove it. God I am not looking forward to that!! Right now my sugar is not under control as it has been running over 200 for the last few days, but hopefully a couple of cups of coffee will take care of that. I use to use sugar in it but it is fine without, actually tastes like coffee!! :-) the whole diet thing is really pissing mee off as nothing that I like has good numbers! It is so frusterating when you go to the store to find something to eat and everything that you pick up you have to put back because the numbers are high. God this sucks!! Thank you my friend, I can always count on you for good advice so I will go and have my cup or two of Joe! Thank you for the response and have a great day!!

I have to agree that artifical sugar is no good. Doesn't taste good and is not good for you. A little sugar is ok, as long as you keep it under control. Try Stevia, which is a natural sweetener, doesn't have any chemicals, and does not raise your blood sugar. Now is a good time to really try to take care of your body and all your other organs.

Please if you have a link please post it. Thank you for your reply and have a great day!!!

This is a tricky one isn't it - I know a couple people who are diabetic who like drinking coffee. Finding studies that have been conducted on coffee helping prevent diabetes is fairly easy. Finding them the shed light on whether it helps or hinders after the fact sure are trickier. Here is one where a small study (ok, its only 14 people) found that caffeine intake at mealtime increased glucose and insulin levels among those 14 people with type 2 diabetes. The problem, even with this study is its only 14 people, taking caffeine tablets at mealtimes. Are the results the same if your not having a meal? Do the other components of coffee, counteract the caffeine. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=34405 If I were you, I would have a cup of coffee a couple hours after lunch, and test your own levels before and after and see how it affects you. At least you could then make an informed decision based on how it actually affects you. Hope this help.. even just a little ;)

First, I'm sorry to hear of your learning you have diabetes. Fortunatley, it is something that can be controlled, and you will adjust to it. As far as coffee goes, it is fine for diabetics, as long as it is in moderation. As far as actually helping with diabetes, I've heard that it only reduces the risk of getting diabetes. My father is diabetic, and he wouldn't do without his coffee several times a day. It does not affect his blood sugar, and that it the main thing you need to watch now. Just keep a close watch on those numbers, and you will learn pretty quickly what will and won't raise your blood sugar levels. Good luck, and if I can help with anything, let me know!

Thank you very much for the response. As I have mentioned before I have noticed that my sugar levels actually go down with my coffee but... my blood pressure goes up. So it is kind of a loose/loose situation. Since I do not want to give up my coffee I will have to use moderation and watch my blood pressure. Thank you for the response and have a great day!!

I drink coffee. Either that or I'm a zombie. :) You're going to read something different everywhere you look for information. The sweetener is hard to get used to. I've been using it for so long now that I actually prefer it to sugar. One bit of advice, just from my experiences. If you must have something sweet and choose the sugar free chocolates, be prepared. Eat them in moderation, seriously, like only one. They wreak havoc on your stomach. That might not be the case for you, but I hate those things. They do the same thing to other people I know. If I want something sweet, I eat a fun size candy bar.

I know what you are talking about with those sugar free candies. I eat more than just a couple and I am catching vertical lift from the toilet seat. YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAA!! It would be fun if it did not hurt sooooo bad!! I personally do not use sugar nor cream, I use a cinnamon stick (natural not the candy) in my coffee. Cinnamon naturally lowers the blood glycose. Thank you for the response and have a great day!!

A new study of coffee and diabetes has shown that men who drank 6 cups of coffee a day reduced their chances of developing type-2 diabetes by half. Women who drank the same amount cut their risk by 30 percent. 126,000 people filled out questionnaires over the past 12-18 years with information about their coffee intake and other health questions. In earlier studies, Dutch researchers discovered that there are compounds in coffee that aid the body's metabolism of sugar. Their study involved 17,000 men and women in the Netherlands. The results were published in November 2002, in the journal Lancet.

My doctor (who is also a diabetic) told me I could drink as much coffee as I wanted. Just be sure it is decaffinated coffee. Sure you can eat pizza if the crust is made from almond and/or soy flour. You can eat cake, cookies even biscuits if they are made with soy or almond flour. Want a sugar cookie to go with your coffee? Sift together 1 & 1/4 C. Almond flour 1 c. Splenda Blend in 1/4 c butter (softened) 1 large egg 1 tsp vanilla extract. Mix well. Form into 1 inch balls on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper, flaten with fork. Bake for 8 minutes(or until light golden brown) in 350 degree oven. Go here for more information about Diabetes. http://www.dlife.com

Hey meeandnotyou! Good to see this discussion is still going on.. I was just reading you post about it raising your blood pressure. Interesting. I suppose you probably don't know, but do you think this is happening only since you became diabetic or was this something that was happening before hand too?

I really do not know as I have not paid very much attention before. It is like a car before you have your first problem with it you do not pay attention to the little noises then once the problems start you pay attention to every noise. I never paid attention to the pressure headaches and such (actually did not even notice them) until I found out I was diabetic but now I pay attention to everything. I do not want to loose my limbs nor my sight. Thank you for the follow up question and have a great day!!

There is so manyconflicting statements that my personal best advice that I can give you on it is try it yourself. I tryed it and found out that it helps to lower my sugar but it also raises my blood pressure which is an issue since we have a elevated risk of heart attack. So try it and check your levels, just when you do it remember that MODERATION is key to all that we do! Thank you for the response and have a great day!!
