Hi-tech machines -- friends or foes?

For example, a garments factory once had 100 employees or workers, then the owner decided to buy a machine that can basically do everything the workers can do, twice as fast and at a lesser time. So, the company fired all the 90 workers because they dont have anything to do anymore that the machine cannot do. So, the question i ask is, are machines really friends because they help us in our business or are they foes because more people are getting out of work because of them?
