Being someone who suffers from anxiety/panic, I was wondering how others deal with this? I have found it very difficult over the years. What is your thought on medication? Sincerely,

My husband suffers from a variety of things and amongst them are anxiety and panic attacks. He does not take medication for this although he has in the past. Now he sits quietly while I hold his hand and wait for the attack of shaking to pass. If it is really bad, meaning he starts to shake excessively and finds getting his breath difficult, then he uses his puffer. He also learn/was taught how to breath in these situations and now has much more control. Good luck and I hope your can get it under control.

Hi there. I have some anxiety and use a very mild medication that my family doctor has prescribed. It has helped me a lot. I also found that Yoga helped because it taught me good deep breathing which is known to help with anxiety. Good luck to you!

Hi icequeen Instead of going for medication which will have sideeffects better to rely on natural remedies like yoga, reiki which are now even practised at all the countries.

I have never had a full-blown panic attack but over the past several years my anxiety level has increased dramatically when I am in uncomfortable situations or feel out of control. I have never taken medicine for it because I really want to avoid going down that road if at all possible. I use breathing exercises to calm myself when I can, and I also try to avoid situations that make me anxious whenever possible.

Hello. I was running through the pages, And I came across this discussion, I am 18 years old, I have been suffering from panic attacks since I was 12 years old, The doctors have put me on everything! paxil,Prozac... Gosh so many more. Nothing seemed to work, Untill one day I thought, I am going to have to controll myself About my fears, I was horrified about storms, And thinking I was dying, Untill I thought if it would come down to me dying.. there was absolutely nothing I could do about it. If A storm came, Then that was gods will, Not like I could change that.lol It's really all about self contrtoll Its VERY hard sometimes, But the more you try and sit and calm yourself down and realize everytihgs going to be okay.. then it does get better!:)

If you can get by without medication I think that is best. I am on medication mainly for depression but it helps anxiety too. I use to do Yoga exercises and meditation and it helped with anxiety and concentration problems a lot. I didn't help with the depression much though. I would definitely prefer not to be on medication. Some of the medications for these sort of conditions have terrible side effects. Weight gain is horrible.

I've never pushed the medication thing, I usually will sit down and control my breathing to get a better handle on things.

I have suffered from anxiety for years, and it took so long to convince doctors that I have panic attacks not depression. I believe they are two different things. They kept putting me on anti-depression medication but all of them had a negative reaction on me. They made me worse and one even made me black out periods of my life. If you are like me where you don't feel you are depressed (except of course that feeling you get of not being able to control your anxiety) and you just need something for anxiety I would recommend what I am taking. I get a perscription just for as needed treatment. It is .25 milligrams of Alprazolam (also known as Xanax) I get a bottle of 30 pills about once a year. It helps me calm down if things get stressful and I feel better knowing I am not on a medication all the time. Of course it is a controlled substantance and some doctors don't like to perscribe it because some people abuse it. I can only get it filled so offten and need a new perscription each time. I also take it if I know I am going into a stressful situation so I don't get stressed out. Ask your doctor about it.

I suffer from panic attacks. It first started a few months ago when I felt like I had a pill lodged in my throat. I never knew what a panic attack was until that day. I can no longer take pills, I take childrens liquid tylenol for head aches. I can get panicky from eating and not think it went down right. I usually can talk myself down but not always. It is the worst feeling anyone can ever experience. I know that there is medicine for this but I CAN NOT take a pill. Is there a liquid? I can't crush it either, can't explain why. I would definitely take medication if they had it in a liquid form. I hate worrying everytime I eat that I'll have an attack, (its not just with pills.) I was only eating puddings, mashed potatoes, creamed soups, etc.. but have worked my way to eating more solid foods now.

I have been dealing with these things for a few years but am just starting to get help. I didn't tell anyone for years. I started telling people about it recently and am seeing a therapist because I have ended up in the hospital because my attack got so bad. I am going to start some new things with my therapist soon so I can let you know what we are doing inour sessions if you want. Shes going to teach me techniques to control it. For right now, I find that having someone to talk to at the beggining of an attack helps me. If I catch it early on, I'll call someone who is aware of my condition and thell them that I'm starting to have an attack. I tell them I just need them to talk to me and they do. They make sure they ask me questions that I have to think a little about and slowly but surly, my attention usually switches to something that they have brought up and the attack has stopped.

definitely go for medication under doctor's guidance. however, there are other methods of dealing with anxiety and panic. As i am from india, and i have personally experienced it, you can try yoga and meditation which is nothing but stress management.

Medication does sometimes work in this case. In most cases the root cause of the anxiety needs to be examined. Sometimes these attacks can be brought on by extreme outside stress either at work or home. Your body is signaling the fight or flight reaction because it's stressed. Sometimes it takes years to get over a certain reaction you have developed to a "trigger".

Cool question. I used to suffer from them, and still do. i start to feel frustrated and anxious and begin shaking etc. I can not take many medications, because of my other conditions, which affect what medications i can have an dhow they work on me. many medications give me bad side effects. What i did, was work out what triggered my attacks by keeping a journal, whenever i felt one coming on, i would write down everything i did, and everything i felt, what i was scared of at that moment and what i wasnt etc. Later on i worked out what my main triggers where. most panic attacks are triggered by something that causes huge stress on the mind and body. and it sends a large amount of chemicals through out your body that your body reacts too .. so what i did, was meditate alot and i worked on those things that scared me the most or triggered my attacks. When i had my first child, i used to have panic attacks all the time, i was terrified that anything might happen to her. that was so scary for me, while everyone else thought it was silly. This was probably my hardest one to try and get over and still am not completely over it as aparent your always scared of anything happening to your child. But i was able to fight off and overcome other fears and stop them from affecting me in such a way. I still get them, but i usually feel them just before it completely overtakes me, and i walk away, go to my room, lie down, and relax, count to ten backwards, imagine myself in some beautiful park or somewhere that makes me happy.. allow myself to completely relax. then once im ok, i go back and deal with what made it start in the first place. I dont know, im a huge believe in the power of the mind, and once you have a little understanding on what makes alot of these things happen, it gives you better chances of overcoming them.

I feel anxiety and panic starts from certain incidents we would have, had to face in our life. Due to some tragic incidents in my family, I also feel very anxious and afraid to hear any sad or bad news. I used to get scared when the phone rings and things like that. When I start feeling such things, I turn to prayer. I just sit and pray and pray and leave everything in God's hands and truthfully I feel a lot relieved after that. Of course, we have to face the situation, but you sort of feel more upto it. Yoga and medidation arre also very good but I have not tried it.
