Why are people considered authorities on this or that?

When they have no personal experience for that particular occurrence. Like Dr. Spok did you know that he has no children? A Phd and a doctorate does not neccessarily make him an authority on child rearing when he has no practical application upon which to support his theories. Or Lamaze it was invented by a man, what does a man know about childbirth and the ways to manage that spectacular and woman specific pain that occurs in childbirthing? How come so many people are willing to put their faith and their fates into the hands of these people?

My belief is that this stems from people not knowing themselves. People always seem to want to look up to someone and that is who stepped into the role.

Ya knwo that is something I often wonder myself to be perfectly honest with you..and I have yet to find the answer...I think ppl tend to not have enough confidence in themselves and are far too swayed by outside influences (family members, friends, etc) so they follow the masses so to speak....But that in itself I dont understand either LOL I was a follower as a kid/teen but not anymore and ppl tend to come to me and want me to lead them but truth is, I'm not a follower or leader, I'm just a woman who knows what she does and does her own thing..I can offer up suggestions and advice but dont ask me to lead you anywhere and sure as hell dont ask me to follow you LOL Back on topic though, one guy who really drives me nuts is Dr.Phil...like you said having a Phd etc doesnt make one an authority on any given topic..so why the mad craze over Philly? I personally think he's out of his bloody mind...OH and another one DR.LAURA!! she is mad crazy insane and a cold hearted b!tch too IMO....
