Is Group Discussion a right approach?

Group Discussion... the only thing which I haven't pass through forever in my life But do you all think that taking GD before giving employment to a person is the right approach followed by the HR people... I don't think so.. e.g I was rejected by Eisai Pharmaceuticals in a GD and out of the 3 people they had selected only 1 person had done a wonderful job and other 2 have not yet submitted their report of summers they had done. And I got selected in Ranbaxy Laboratories where I and done a wonderful job. Do you think that the HR practice for the recruitment of the summer trainees was the right approach by taking the GD first?
