I'm having my practicum this semester where I'm teaching mathematics. My students are grade 7 students who are homogeneous. I'm feeling that I'm not being effective because everytime we have new lesson some students are not listening that's why if we have quizes or seatwork those students can't answer any questions. What I observed from them even to their first teacher they already have that attitude. I wan't to change that but it seems I fail. Can anyone suggest an activity, games and classroom management technique that I can use.

I will give you advice base to my experience as a mother (I'm not teacher). Before you teach them the lesson teach them how listen you.Speak with them about anything they love to discuss(not lesson)learn them hear you and keep them attention on you by interesting topics. They will learn hear you when you speak, this will effect them.I hope you see some different. The children like feel that they can speak with them teacher about anything.Listen them when they did for they listen you also.

Yes, that's one of my plans. I observed they have very short attention span but when you speak of things that they can relate they are very to eager to listen.

Create activities where a few students must work together on a problem. YOU make the groups based on your observations. Get them talking about math and make it something fun. I am not sure what you are teaching at this moment but there must be something you could do to get them interested. Good luck. When all else fails ask your professor what he/she thinks.

I'll try that because most o the time I let them choose their groupmates.
