Shortening usually refers to solid vegetable shortening that stays solid at room temperature. An American brand is Crisco, a solid white flavorless vegetable fat. I looked around on the internet and one site said UK versions are Cookeen, Trex, White Flora.
Hope this helps. Good luck

what i've learned is that shortening just means either butter, margarine or oil. i am not sure about this. but i remember one time when i asked a friend about it and said that these three are just called shortenings when listed in ingredients. but i'll check around more to see some other examples.
