I have bouts of insomnia where I can't sleep for no love nor money and sometimes I stay in a state of half asleep where i'm not really asleep but i'm not awake either and my brain is racing! I've tried loads of so called remedies but I draw the line at taking pills, has anyone got any tips on how they manage to get to sleep at night?

Oh I've never heard of that, What do you do with it? Drink it? Eat it? Mylot does play on your mind alot doesn't it? I've made a pact to turn it off at least an hour or so before I go to bed!

Valarian Root is a good one to check out, there are a lot of teas you can try too like Sleepy Time.

I had one of those bouts last night, Bizzie... I blamed it on the full moon. Strange, but I never seem to sleep through a full moon! hmmmmmmm. A bath with lavender oil in is good, a few drops of lavender oil on your pillow or some lavender in a bag, beneath your pillow helps too. Lavender is very relaxing. Don't drink tea or coffee within three hours of going to bed, and take a milky drink just before bed time. Don't eat within four hours of going to bed, and don't do any physical exercise in the evening. Sit down and watch television or read a book and unwind for a couple of hours. Don't read your book in bed; keep the bedroom solely for a place of rest. Read your book whilst relaxing on the sofa... it will still make you heavy eyed. I hope some of this helps. There are a few other remedies, but these are normally quite effective. Blessed Be.

I'm wondering whether it may be the full moon that effects me as I've not really noticed before! I think i'm coming out of my particular stretch of insomnia at the moment. I have been reading particularly stretching books in bed and that seems to be doing the trick! Thanks again for your response Brightest Blessings!

I think you might be right about the full moon... children of the moon that we both are! lol. Next time it happens, make a note of the dates and length of the problem... i.e. whether it lasts three days, or whether it lasts until the new moon. That would be an interesting thing to record in your BOS? I'm convinced that mine is related to and worst, at full moon, but it does go on throughout waning as well. Brightest Blessings.

Try meditation instead of medication, possibly accupressure or accupuncture. If you know someone who practices and is willing to come to your house before you try to fall asleep try reflexology (massaging of the hands and feet.) I had posted a post requesting natural cures for insomnia one suggestion I got was to eat apples and or Bannanas as those help the body to drowse. Also fresh honeycomb, comb, honey, and all the sleepy is in the beeswax!

I think taking pills wouldn't help. I too suffers from Insomia, what I do is read anything that I can and just hope that my eyes would get heavy. Maybe sleeping in a proper posture also would help a lot, sleep in a position to what you think would make you feel comfy. I do that sleeping on a single pillow on my head and rest my neck leveled with my body..

No I won't be taking any pills you can be sure of that! I've tried the comfy thing with pillows and stuff but doesn't seem to help. Thankfully I think I'm coming out of my batch of insomnia at the moment either that or reading a boring book is helping! Thanks for your input!

I struggle with insomnia alot too. I'll go months where I sleep fourteen hours a week...the thing I've found that often works for most people is to tire out the mind. Read a book on a subject you have trouble with understanding..do a bunch of math problems..and force yourself to do it and not quit simply because you're bored. Sooner or later you'll drop off to sleep..especially if you're also physically tired, clean, well-fed, and laying down somewhere comfortable while doing this. Unfortunately for me, my brain's hard to tire out :( And I've tried everything. It took me a four years to get to being completely unable to stay awake. And this isn't good either. It's not even that I don't need a lot of sleep..I actually need alot of it..I just..can't usually. Mostly 'cause I'll get so focused on doing something..or several somethings, that I'll simply forget to sleep or eat (though thankfully people remind me it's dinner time or lunch..or breakfast)..and the next thing I know it's morning and I have more things to do. It hasn't technically been a problem..since schoolwork and things hasn't suffered. If anything I do better since I focus completely on them. For most people all they need to do is focus on something completely abstract, like the sound of their breathing or a light..and NOT think of anything. Their brains usually get bored and drop off to sleep. I hope this helps!

Thanks for this, and i've been drifting off to sleep after reading books that I had to try and work out! Whether this is helping because I'm coming out of my bout of insomnia or actually helping only time will tell! Thanks very much for your response!

I do have a lavendar 'wheat bag' (scented bag filled with wheat that you can stick in the microwave and heat) It does smell really nice as I put it on my pillow, but I'm afraid it doesn't send me off to sleep! Thanks for your tip!

you cannot make yourself fall asleep but you can imitate the deep breathing pattern while you are sleeping which helps your body to relax and bring you to sleep. This may sound religious but I have found praying as one effective way to sleep. Some people read the Bible in order to get sleepy, prayer is my remedy. Also, try not looking at the clock, just go back to sleep and not worry how long you slept, and wake up only when the sun rises or when the alarm rings.

Thank you for your response - I have tried the breathing technique and found that it does help sometimes, but if I'm really agitated then it doesn't work! If the bible works for you then it's a good idea - just don't think I'll try that one though :-) Best Wishes!

I also suffer from insomnia alot. I guess people with great minds all do! I usually take valiriun root, it is a natural relaxer. I do not like taking medications to help me sleep and would rather do it holistically. If you can't find it, let me know, I'm pretty sure that I could mail it to you!

I have had that very same problem. I actually just responded to somebody else that had a very similar discussion. When I go to bed at night if I can't sleep it's usually because my brain is working overtime and won't allow me to sleep. I have found that reading a couple hours before bed helps, at least it does for me. It makes my brain slow down, and after a couple hours I'm ready for bed. I usually sleep very well after that.
