My mom is telling me that if you have a girl in china. You can't keep the child. And you can only have one child. Is this true

Not entirely true. China does have a population problem. Urban families are restricted to ONE child, rural families can have 2. There are steep fines for having more kids than you are allowed. Society seems to "value" male children more than female children, and it is common in China for families to kill female babies, so that they can try to have a boy.
They now have a SERIOUS problem with male/female ratio in the country, and not enough women for the men to marry!

So if you have more than the alotment, do they take the kids, or do they get a fine? I was wondering about how they would have enough women to merry if they could never have girls.

They get FINED, and most people can't afford the FINE. The government doesn't show up and kill your extra children. They are allowed to have girls, but in their culture girls are an "expense" and boys are a "resource" so many families KILL girl children so they can have a boy child. They treat boys like they will eventually bring an INCOME into the family, and girls LEAVE the family to get married.
There WILL be a big problem for men in China, and it won't solve their population problem as they will import brides from other countries in order to get married.

Sadly to say, yes it is true. China have been over populated for decades now, and economic crisis had surge for sometime now. So the government had come up to this law. Each family must only have one child, better be it a son. Girls are less precious to the family, so lots of them are given up for adoption for foreigners outside their country.

i m an indian n i m living in china since 3 yrs....
to tell u that ur mom is absolutely ryt....
its the rule here u cant have more than 1 child here in china
thats the way they keep their population in control....
