Publicity stunt causes terrorism scare in Boston

Turner Broadcasting got a lot of unfavorable publicity for a new cartoon show today when a publicity stunt went awry. The stunt involved blinking electronic devices, and it shut down parts of Boston as authorities investigated what they thought might be a potential terror threat. Whoops! The AP reports: "More than 10 blinking electronic devices planted at bridges and other spots in Boston threw a scare into the city Wednesday in what turned out to be a publicity campaign for a late-night cable cartoon. Most if not all of the devices depict a character giving the finger. Highways, bridges and a section of the Charles River were shut down and bomb squads were sent in before authorities declared the devices were harmless." Turner had done the same publicity campaign in other cities, apparently without incident. I wonder if they notified the cities involved in the other cases?

It amazed me that "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" went this far to promote itself. They do have a cult following and one of my exes was one of those members. It attracts goofy, silly teenage boys to watch their show on Adult Swim. The humor is equivalent to an animated Jay & Silent Bob theme so it's no wonder they thought of something so idiotic as this. I saw the way it looked last night on the news and it showed a square-headed creature giving the finger. It was lit up and did look like it had some computerized device embedded in it. Not only this happened, but a pipe bomb was found in Boston as well (not as deadly as a 747 crashing into a building, but still). They sure picked a bright idea on this one.

Never heard of the show before, but now I have! And I'll probably check it out. I wonder why there was a problem in Boston but not in the other cities?

That's pretty wierd! I wouldn't want to watch the cartoon just because of that lol! I guess what they say might be true, "bad publicity is better than none at all"

The first news reports I heard wouldn't mention the show, to avoid giving it publicity; later they did mention it. (It's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", part of Adult Swim.) I hadn't heard of the show before, I sure have now!

I haven't seen any of the Adult Swim stuff. I spend so much time online that I don't get over to the boob tube much...

Considering security-conscious everyone is today, you'd think a device with batteries and wires beside a highway or bridge would not be the best idea for a promo!
