The Sky is Falling-Space Junk

Recently there were reports about a satellite being blown out of the sky by a nation testing missles. I was shocked to hear that this one incident produced thousands of pieces of debris. I looked into it a bit closer and was horrified to realize there are millions of pieces of space junk floating around our planet as a direct result of human behavior. Whose responsibility is it to clean up this mess? I hate to think about how badly we've polluted our own planet and NOW we're rapidly trashing the solar system as well. We are told that all of this space junk will burn away harmlessly if it reaches the earth's atmosphere, but who knows for certain how it will impact our planet over time? I think its time human beings took responsibility gor our actions and safeguard the environment and not to go around trashing the rest of the universe! The problem is who will take action and how on earth would they do a cleanup job miles above the earth's surface?

it was China who tested their own missiles and they did successfully blew up one of their weather satellites. while it is true that some of the pieces will just burn up when it would enter the earth's atmoshpere, other pieces that would be left floating the space around earth would be harmful to other satellites and space vehicles like the space shuttle or some othe space rockets since it could puncture them and make them leak precious oxygen. i hope they do something about it though, the US is only concerned on the military side of the issue.

Maybe NASA and the Russian space program could be convinced that it is in their best interest to eliminate some of the space junk that could damage their equipment. Thanks for your thoughtful response hellboi!

no problem, but before the Chinese blew up their satellite. space is already plagued by mechanical waste brought by early explorations by the US and Russia. maybe they do need to come up with a way to clean up their act before anything bad happens.

Well I think I'll write a letter to my congressman and suggest that NASA at least be responsible for some of the cleanup before they get more funding. Of course I'm sure they are going to listen to me :)
