That would be a yes. Using an additional video card other than the built-in one will surely increase your computer's performance.

internal VGA will help but its more hardcore playing if you have a external VGA. Why? CPU runs 100% of your heart's PC... now your 256 internal VGA occupy your 40% of your CPU and your CPU now runs 60% but if your use external VGA, it reduces 20% it needs. So you have 80% to CPU and 20% to external VGA. RUNS SMOOTH!!! ask more to me and maybe i can share some links to you about comparing a external hardware VGA to your CPU

Another thing not mentioned was that if it an onboard graphics chip, then it will probably share the system memory(RAM). Which will reduce loading times and probably create hitchs during gameplay. I recommend buying a dedicated graphics chip. Ati cards tend to be cheaper than nvidia cards. Anything in the 7 series of nvidia cards should work ok for nfs carbon. I dont really know much about ati cards sorry. Hope this helps.

Yes, onboard graphics chips tend to share system memory. If you have lots of memory, you can configure your onboard graphic chip memory by changing your BIOS settings. Remember, the important thing here is your total system memory, if you have 1GB of memory, and you allocate 256 MB to your graphics, you should be able to have a respectable gaming experience, and you wouldn't need to buy a new graphic card if you're scrimping on expenses. However, if you want all the bells and whistles that a game like NFS Carbon has to offer, then you would do well to have a dedicated video card. I hear ATI cards have fantastic performance. So a dedicated video card, lots of onboard memory and a fast processor ought to give you the best gaming experience overall. P.S. NFS Carbon is played best with at least a gamepad. The downhill duels are a killer! :)
