I think it simply is a symbol for a smile in "leet" , the 2 l's being the apices of the smile (corners of a smiling mouth) and the o representing the lower curve of a smiling mouth . #What do you think ?

The following link provides a detailed explanation of how LOL came about and where it first appeared on the net when it was still pretty much BBS. http://pages.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/~crwth/LOL.html LOL as far as I know has always meant Laugh Out Loud. Cheers!

the people who use it tell me they mean it as 'laughing out loud' whatever it may be, i prefer the ha ha, to the 'lol' i don't know why, for some reason, i find it annoying, and i'm not easily annoyed.

Me too . I remember chatting with my brother (abroad for 5 years now) , he would write lol and brb . I thought "brb" was a burp , I couldn't get "lol" at all . I would ask him "Whats that you keep typing ? Is it some symbol ?" and he would just type "lol" again and again . That caused a psychological complex in me triggered by lol . lol!

LOL has always stood for laugh out loud, and it's very different from l33t sp3ak. and :) is the universal smiley.
