I did not join any fraternity in college despite the invitations. Now that am into my second course, I have invitations again from the fraternities of my friends. I am undecided of joining because none of my family members join a fraternity. Second, I feel that joining fraternity will impose additional obligations on myself, which I’m afraid I cannot fulfill. Another reason is that I don’t want to divide my time once more for fraternity activities. And finally the invitations come from three opposing fraternities, members of which are my friends. I don’t want to stain my relationship with friends by joining an opposing or rival fraternity of another friend. I have not reached the final decision regarding this one. I want to know the advantages and disadvantages of joining a Fraternity or sorority. Anyone who has been a frat member? Did it affect your schooling? Did you really benefit from it?

I did NOT join a Sorority in college, even though I was invited by several friends. I didn't because I already had a circle of friends through playing club sports and being involved in student organizations for my major. I also knew that if you joined you HAD to live in the house for at least one year, and THAT sounded like pure torture to me. I had enough social networking outside of the sorority, that I didn't feel I needed to PAY MONEY for more. I also got plenty of leadership skills and networking specific to my major and the industry I currently work in that I felt my epxeriences with professional societies was more important than a social network. So I never joined, and I don't regret it.

I have never been one myself before. It does take alot of times away from your schedule, but if you're willing to do it, it can be done. Good luck with your decision.

If you've never been in one, how can you speculate on the time required of you by being a member? Personally, I think that my membership in a fraternity actually improved my time management, and allowed me to fit in more than I ever could have imagined doing in college.

Well I've never joined the soroiety and I don't intend to. To be honest I've never seen the point in them. :) But that's a personal preference of mine. I think though that if you're hesitating this much over it then it's not worth it.
