All this fuss over Muslim Bathrooms!

I was reading the newspaper at work today and on page one, right under some form of murder or disaster, they had a detailed article about my University. They were making a fuss because my university, like 95% of the Universities in my state of Australia, have a Muslim-only bathroom! Let me tell you one thing first; my Uni is a HUGE place. There's probably 20 regular bathrooms in the whole place, and one muslim-only female and muslim-only male bathroom, which is located right next to the Muslim prayer room. These bathrooms have been there for around 10-15 or so years, years before 9/11 and the new-found prejudice against the muslim religion. There's probably been over a million people going through this uni in those times, and no one, NO ONE has every complained. However, someone thought It was the 'Right thing to Do' to anonymously (scared little so and so) inform the newspaper that they felt discriminated against because there was no 'Christian-only' bathroom for them! The reason they supply this bathroom is because of the rituals, like the washing of the feet, that muslims go through before they enter the prayer-room, rituals that might be frowned apon in a regular bathroom, or that the person might be uncomfortable performing for people who do not understand the religion to see. Now the newspaper are suggesting that my University is Racist and biased, and should remove the bathrooms at once! I can't believe all this fuss is being made over ONE persons complaint (in a uni of around 10,000 students) after 10 to 15 years of its use, and the furore that it seems to have caused! It made me even angrier when I was speaking about the article in disgust and people at my work were disagreeing, saying that we 'owe the muslims nothing' and making jokes about terrorism! Do you find the idea of a muslim-only bathroom racist, or would you have a problem seeing a muslim-only bathroom (when there is a regular bathroom located right beside it)?

La Trobe university was in the news a few months ago regarding this. I am not clear about whether the toilet facilities had existed for several years. But if that is true, then there is no basis for the outcry. La Trobe is one of the finest universities in Australia btw.

Well I started to post one thing and then re-read what you wrote. I also did a bit more thinking on it. I don't necessarily agree with separate bathrooms but since they are right next to the Muslim prayer room I can understand having it designed to make it easier for them to prepare for their rituals. Now I do agree if they are going to have this then near the chapel they should have one for Christians only. Agreed most Christians do not have special cleaning to do prior to mass or prayer but if you are going to have a separate one for them then you should have one for the other religions. Same with near a Jewish temple or any other religion that might be practiced on the University. If you have the area for them to pray/worship then you should make the same allowances for all faiths not just Muslim.
