I'm new here and very confused

I am struggling here to see how this works. Are discussions meant to go in a particular place or are they just all in the one place. I filled in my interests and when I came to post it asked me to pick one of them or general. I really enjoy places like this, but any advice for the newbie. I'm sure there are plenty of us out there. PS. I'm Claire from Glasgow (Scotland) and its my birthday on Monday
