No offense,i have never been to US n always thought that ppl. in US are very intelligent and very smart, but now i have heard from many of my friends (who visited US)that ppl. in most of the ppl. in us have very poor IQ n general knowlwdge, n most ppl. stop their education midway n start doing some job or other, only very few ppl. go for college but those who go are very brillient ,ppl. who invent new things n diacovers,it it true, that only very few ppl. in us are intelligent and those who are intelligent are very good, also ppl. from countries like india, china etc. constitute the majority of intelectual posts like ,in NASA, doctors, researchers, etc. Please dont take it in any wrong way, i have heard these things from many of my friends, jus wanna know if its true. I like ppl. from all the country n every part of the world.

I'm not an American but i know that what you said is not true, your friends like many people going to other countries meet 10 or 20 people and come back talking about "all the Americans" or all of the "Indians", etc if you deal with clerks, security guards, hotel workers, etc you can't expect them all to be inelegant and geniuses.. you are on the internet now, see how many Americans use it, they build sites, write smart things, invent softwares.. go to chat sites and talk with them, talk with them here at mylot and you will know that your friends are very ignorant to judge people this way.

I dont know why u all get so upset n carried i ask a simple opinion , why get so agitated n all, i never meant anything like that which u r trrying to interpret , all i asked was ur opinion, but u r not patient enough to read or maybe carried away by the dumb, if u r smart then dont get if anyone calls u dumb(although i didnt term ppl. from us dumb ,i jus asked an opinion). plz try to be open minded n stay chill, i am desperate to choose a best answer but no answer is satisfying me.(ok i know thats my problem) but guys plz dont think i am branding americans dumb, but such post may imply that(see ppl. can think very well when they r agitated or angry,so again i am not sayin u guys are dumb, n free i guess theres no country in the world which is not free, but are we all free from our sorrows worries, impatience, well thats a different matter altogsther). THanks n cheers

I don't think Americans are unintelligent. I think we have knowledge in different things. I know nothing about cars or history, but I know alot about writing and literature. WHile my friend knows a ton about history and science, but nothing about literature. It depends on the knowledge you attempt to seek from us.

First of all you use text messaging conventions in your post. This is a proper forum and you should use proper English. I is not 'i". people should be spellend out, and is not"n" and so on. So right off the bat people have a hard time understanding what your point is. You keep asking about an intellectual divide. I don't know exactly what you mean by this. I have visited the US many many times and have had contact with all sorts of people, some very intelligent some not so intelligent, some highly educated some high school drop-outs. What most people want to tell you is that this exists in all countries of the world. What I know for a fact is, that anyone in the US has the freedom to choose what kind of education they want. There are very expensive universities and there are state colleges with low tuition fees. There are also bursaries, scholarships and student loans. There are also evening courses for people who work during the day. Instead of listening to your friends who met a few people you have the opportunity to educate yourself since you have access to the internet, you can read, you can join as many forums as you like and exchange ideas with Americans and people from other countries and then form your own opinions. Yes, there are very rich and very poor people in the US but there is no caste barrier and many people who were born into a very poor situation have become very rich. America is indeed the land of opportunity.

Thanks for the response, n also for the advice to avoid text messege conventions.Well you asked me to use internet to learn more about americans rather than beleiving my friends who just visited US and meet only few guys, very correct.Well Mam,what do you think i am doing, by posting this discussion? Exaclty what you said ,using internet forums to interact and form opinions about people around the world. And i must admit that after reading all the responses from you people,i have got enough idea about people in US,and have formed my opinion. Your response is marked the best. I have tried my level best to avoid using text like notations for words for your reading covinience but still if they have crept in then please forgive me for that. Thanks to all of you who responded. All though i have marked a best response for this i still welcome other people who would like to share there own thoughts. Thank you.

I have never been to U.S. but the way you told about it, i did not agree with you. first of all no country is perfect one. and also judging the country on the basis of some of your friends words is a wrong perception. may be that b true but it lies to all the countries of the world. we should not forget about the advancement and tech of america

justinmackx- I like the way you put that. It was very tactful and very true. These problems are true in every country. Basing the opinions on what a few friends said is wrong. deepuj- I think that in order to critisize someone else's intelligence you must first be intelligent. An intelligent person is not one who forms their entire opinion on what a few of their friends said. An intelligent prson would do their own research to answer their questions and think for themself. Also, you really have to be in the country to really know anything about it. So you are prejudging a place you have never been to and hardly know.... I would say that is REALLY ignorant.

The USA isn't the only country in the world where people don't complete school. I read once that more than 80% of people in the world will never go to high school. I highly doubt that everyone in your country is an interlectual and have high degrees. Also you'll probably find that getting a degree in the USA and getting one in India are 2 different things. Sure it's a bit of paper in the end but there is not a worldwide course that you have to complete - it's different for each country. I wouldn't classify any country as "dumb" just based on a few people that your friends may have met on their travels.

I agree that classifying a country based on a handful of people someone has met isn't too intelligent in itself. That would be like me assuming that everyone in India is a computer guru because every time I call Microsoft for tech help I get an Indian. That's just plain ignorant.

I think the mere and simple facts explain it all. If were were a country of ignorant people would we be the forerunners in technology, space, finance and such? Would the rest of the world be flocking HERE to make their dreams come true. Like any other country in the world, there are unintelligent people amongst us. To think an entire country is dumb based on a handful you've met or your friends claim to have met simply speaks of the ignorance of your friends to make such a claim.

ahhh.. different classes of people! yes...there are but we are also lucky enough to have the opportunity no matter what our finances, to get an education if we want it bad enough. the poor usually must work harder to get it, but it is there for them!

I guess u didnt understood waht i wanted to ask, no doubt that US is front-runner in all the fields,i also know that there are lot of guys in US who are discovering new things n technologies ,n that its the land of oppurtunity.I appologies for not being clear with my question(but i still feel, there was nothing wrong in it, but i shud have been more elaborate) . See here in india we have a problem,(well we have many , n all the nations of the world does , he he..lol), here we have something called the finiacial divide, the rich are very rich, lot of money, so much to feature in the top 25 list of forbes , but at the same time ppl. here are dying w/o food for 1 time. This gap is huge. Ok so whst i wanted to ask is, does there exist a divide(i term it intelectuall divide) in US?

if the usa ppl recruit smart people from abroad that's a sig of intelligence, so i am not against that. Americans can be peculiar for others, but not more stupid than any other nation, that's only a prejudice and a cliche, the only difference is that the usa are currently the most powerful in the world, and the ppl from the next ruling country will have to go through the same in the future.

Interesting discussion ... I wonder if you have given an IQ tests recently and observed the result that you got from it and then compared it with an average american ... I am an indian and love for what i am Average American IQ = 90 which is slightly higher than Indian IQ, its actually brought a wonderful point here, I work in an MNC and have visited USA couple of times only ,,, though i mostly deal with american people and interact with american management people all the time ...i can assure you they are not dumb at the slighest .... you can just have an idea from the hollywood movies... Now coming back to a serious debate,.,, education in USA and in India has a huge difference, In india we only specialize in our particular fields, not the same in USA, an average student would certainly be brighter than an Average student in India... sports and kind are given much of an importance there and not in india, politics plays a big role in india even if one needs to get into sports and its not the same case in USA, In USA People believe in doing what they are best at and dont curb there natural instincts unlike like Asian countries I think Government makes a hell lot of a difference in 2 countries thanks sid

It varies everywhere in the world. You know, I have seen people that were rude everywhere in the world. Everyone is different and someone is going to find everyone, the smart, the average, and all in between. I cannot say what your friends saw because they may have been ignored because they were foreigners. You know, sometimes people just don't like dealing with foreigners, okay? Now, there is going to be people who don't finish school, okay? I am sure you learnt that as you discussed it on here. Not everyone is "dumb", just as not everyone is "dumb" in the world. Have a nice day. Pablo

America is just like any other country diversity means you can find all kinds of people. Pick a trait (+ or -)we got 'em. 240 million people- not everybody can be the brightest crayon in the box. What makes us different is that we admit it!! I always here how Europeans are very intelligent and cultured. I agree my European Grandparents were very much that way. ...But Come on Everybody in Europe is?

This is a bunch of ****. Though yes some people start college then stop, that happens in all countries. It doesn't mean that people are dumb. Point in Case. Bill Gates founder of Microsoft. He is a college drop out. I live in America and though their are foriegners that work here, trust me when I say this (my daughter goes to different doctors, because she has a life long diesese in her Intestinal Tract) We have yet to come across a foreign doctor. My husband also has to go see different type of doctors. Out of the last 15 he has seen one has been a foriegn doctor, I think he may have been from India. I didn't ask though. I feel he went to school here, he has citizenship. I don't care where he is from he is AN AMERICAN now. My last thought on this, is that people all over the world are dumb, but all over the world there are smart people too. People who keep closed minds are the really dumb ones.

Nothing wrong with America or Americans, the country of the people, it's the damn government that is the problem. I hear a lot about the ugly American, and I never believed it. don't believe it now, and I never will believe it. Americans are fine, but the government has to go!

I have met a great many people who didn't finish high school who are very intelligent and doing very well for themselves. I have also met a great many who got college degreas and are rather stupid and working serving up fries. I have met a great many more college grads who flash that piece of paper and THINK they're smart but are in fact the most IGNORANT people out there. Stupid happens, it's a world wide fact. There is a great population of dumb people world wide.

Ok, I am in the US. and there are many dumb people. You run across them every day. there ignorance is amazing. Don't get angry with me, there are many bright people here, people who get degrees, and go on to do great things. But the run of the mill population is not that bright. Kids in schools are learning less and less, and I dont see as many kids being geared towards college. On a whole we seem to be satisfied with just getting by. Just look at our prison systems...a small percentage of people who do not live by the hard work ethic. the US just does not put enough emphasis on schooling and hard work ethic. Just my opinion, from what I see everyday.
