What does the word 'Islam' literally mean?

i have just looked it up and the anwer i read said submission,not sure if its a 100% correct though.

Thanks for this discussion and to all those who explained the meaning. I didn't know myself but was interested to know, so was pleased to see that many had already left responses indicating the meaning of 'Islam'.

The Arabic word Islam literally means both "surrender" and "peace". Surrender to the will of God and the peace that is entailed in that surrender. Islam is a monotheistic religion and believe that to search for God through images is a sin. Muslim teachings correspond closely with the Old Testament of Bible, and Moses and Jesus are both accepted as Muslim prophets, although Jesus is not believed to be the son of God.
