Will snow chains damage tires?

I may have to drive for several miles to visit family over Xmas. Part of the way may be clear (200 miles), but part of the way may be icy (400 Miles). Will it damage my tires to leave the snow chains on entire way?

I don't think that they will damage the tires, but I know that they are really rough on the roads. Many places ban chains now and will fine you if you use them. Be sure to check this out before you go. By the way, Xmas was 6 weeks ago...

I thought that this was odd because of the XMas part. I just noticed in your profile that you live in Brazil. Does it snow in Brazil? I didn't think it did...

Yes, in brazil not fall snow. But, i have a house in USA.
