Dragons

I love drawing dragons, because they don't really exist, so I can make them look however I want. It's interesting how most cultures have some reference to dragons, from the big winged european variety in knight tales to the long serpentine oriental ones... Mythological creatures in art are an excellent way to let your imagination work, since you don't have real reference material to look at, you can just let it represent your own interpretation. I'd love to hear other opinions on this!

I used to love drawing dragons as young girl, but I have not been drawing like I used to lately. I love both the European style and Asian dragond, but one of my favorites was Smaug from the animated The Hobbit movie. He scared me when I was little.

I feel like that, too. But I have been doing a good deal of writing lately, which is a change for me. I used to write and draw when I was younger and then I went to college and just stopped because I had to write about art and then try to make it. But I remember when I was young the dragons from the Dragon's Lance series inspired me, too.

Did you get a chance to see the Animal Planet special on dragons? I think it was called "Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real." It was presented as though it were a regular documentary on an animal and (based on many different culture's folklore and descriptions) decribed how dragons mated, nested, hunted, etc. It was really entertaining and neat to see the thought that went into it. I highly recommend it!

There are some really awesome dragon books out there but some of the cutest are the ones for kids. I just got another copy of The Popcorn Dragon because the first one got destroyed. Have you ever read the Dragonology books? They give a lot of information about them and the outside of the books are done up in a really nice way. The titles are: Dragonology Handbook: A Practical Course In Dragons Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons

I just ordered one of those Dragonology books, as well as a "Practical guide to Dragons" by Lisa Trumbauer, both from Amazon.com. I can't wait for them to get here, it'll be a fun read!

Hmmm...more books I need to look into adding to my library. :) Thank you. One of my favorite book series is Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern. She also wrote a book called A Diversity of Dragons. Amazon.com has some used ones available, but not new. My $0.02 at the moment.

Aw.... that's cool! I'd really wanted to draw dragons, but I can't, although I tried hard to do so. I like their big muscles, their wings, their beautiful scales....... aw... so cool!

Purple dragon seal - Dragons rock and rule
If you can try and check out the artwork for Anne McCaffrey's Pern series, they are gorgeous.

Thanks, I have seen a lot of it, I used to read the whole Pern series. That and Dragonlance books were some of my favourite fantasy reads growing up.

While my creative talents do not lie in imagery, I do appreciate the variety of dragon artwork out there. There seems to be much more variety in dragons than in any other mythological creature that I can think of at the moment. My $0.02 at the moment.

I have always loved stories about dragons and dragonslayers. I have never been able to draw them though, no matter how hard I try. Dragons are just not something I can easily visualize or put on paper. I write about them though.
