It means Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Most networks today that connect to the internet use the TCIP protocol or IP for short. So the router that you connect to cable modem, or DSL modem are IP routers. Voice over IP requires a device like your computer and microphone or a cell phone that can connect via 802.11B, 802.11G or 802.11N with your wireless router. After the device translates your analog voice signal to digital it then transmits it over the internet connection and is decoded back into analog when it reaches the destination device. The most popular VOIP service for home is now SKYPE.

It means Voice over IP (Internet Protcol). It can be free with services like Skype, if you're calling from one computer to another. But cable and phone companies are now offering VoIP services that let you make unlimited calls with one flat monthly rate.

What is VoIP? VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and is also alternatively known as Internet Telephony. VoIP allows you to make phone calls over your ISP (Internet Service Provider) connection, instead of your phone company, by sending voice (data) over the internet. How does VoIP work? Current telephone system relies on reliable but inefficient method for connecting calls called ‘Circuit’ Switching. When a call is made between two persons, a ‘circuit’ is established and the connection is maintained for the entire duration of the call with a dedicated wire connection between two persons. A long distance call costs high, because of the copper wire that connects all the way from one point to another.
