I discoved last fm (http://last.fm) on august and since then I am hooked to it. This is a virtual community gathered around musical tastes. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to use this web site. 1- Get a free account, all you need is an email address. 2- Install the standalone last fm player on your computer. The player is available for Windows (all versions), Mac and Linux. 3- You may also play music within your browser using last fm' s flash player. Though, I find that the standalone player provides a better sound quality. 4- Start listening to music. You can either search for specific artists or specific tags. The system will play songs similar to the ones you are looking for (and of course, including the ones you are looking for). 5- While listening, you can either vote for or ban the tracks being played. This will help the system discover your tastes. 6- After playing a sufficient number of tracks, the system will match you with some other users who have similar tastes as you, these are called your neighbors. Currently, I have 250 neighbors. 7- The system will also build a customized radio for you, called your Neighbor radio. This radio will only play music that you like, isn' t that great? I completely forgot about conventional radio stations now, and Last Fm has become my sole station. Besides, it is commercial free. The web site also allowed me to discover plenty of new artists and songs from all over the world. Finally, my profile on Last fn is http://www.last.fm/user/spiderman05/ I hope that you will enjoy this web site. Cheers.

This sounds like a really great new concept. I am bound to try this and I wonder, can it compare to the ipods and other forms of more conventional radio listening? Also, I hope I am computer savvy enough to get through the instructions. They seem a little complicated.

sounds like a competitor to pandora.com (the pandora genome project). i really love this website, and you don`t need to download a player. only gripe is that it sometimes runs ultra slow...but that is only *sometimes*, usually it runs nicely. i will check out your last fm too, thanx for the tip!

Actually, I was using pandora too before I discovered last fm. Pandora does not match you with other users. also, last fm has a much more varied collection. Pandora, as far as I know is just starting to include some international music. In last fm, there is music from all over the world: NA, china, brazil, eastern europe... Last thing, it is also possible to use last fm without downloading anything.
