Scabies

I just found out that one of the children I take care of everyday has scabies. I was wondering if anyone knows exactly what this is. I was told it was like skin lice. I was also wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of them, or prevent others from getting them.

My family has had it once, so I hope I can give you some information. It is basically a skin lice, although about ten times more irritating. It is extremely itchy, to the point where you want to rip your skin off. The misconception people often make is that it's caused by dirt or filth, when the opposite is true. They thrive on clean bodies and clean environements. Removal is much like lice. You go to a doctor and they'll prescribe the body lotion. You apply it, and at the same time, have to clean (vacuum, wash) everything in your house ... couches, beds, bedding ... vaccuum all the furniture. All clothing has to be washed in hot water, all brushes, everything. A week later you do the process again. By then, hopefully it's gone. The other thing to point out is that it is EXTREMELY contagious. It will literally jump from one person to another in close proximity, so if you've been close to this kid, you will start noticing the itching within the next two weeks. That's normally how long it takes to show up. You may also notice a rash on your arms, legs, thighs. You have my sympathy.... this is ten times harder to get rid of than lice.

Oh my goodness. I think I am going to cry!!! I was told by the parents that he had a bacterial infection from something in the water and I have been watching this kid for months and she decides to tell me NOW that it is something that could explain why I have been itching and I thought I just had dry skin or something. It really bothers me that she just told me this. But she also said that other people that have been really close to this child have not gotten it because they take extremely hot showers and she was told that by doing this, the "skin lice" could not survive. She even tried to blame it an my two dogs that have never had anything like that. They have never had fleas or anything. Do I ask my vet about it, is it possible that my babies (dogs) have it?

Absolutely not. Scabies can only live on humans ... cats, dogs and other pets are completely safe. And showering with hot water will do nothing either. In all reality, a person with scabies who showers will notice they are most active and annoying immediately after. As I said, they thrive on a clean environment. If you shower, you're clean ... and they're happy, and more active .. making you even more itchy. If you've been itching, there's your warning signal, get to a doctor for the lotion. You and everyone else you've been in contact with in the last few weeks, family members, etc. By far the most aggrivating part is the housecleaning ... having to wash and vaccuum everything. If you miss even one thing, you can recatch it after you've gotten it off of you. Scabies can live for up to 2 weeks on material and furniture. Good luck.

That's what I've always heard, is that it was like skin lice. I can't give you any personal advice, but, I can give you a wikipedia link, which is generally useful; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scabies Good luck.
