Can a Groundhog really predict the weather?

I think the whole concept of a groundhog predicting an early spring based on whether or not he saw his shadow is just silly. I realize it is just for fun, but are there people who actually believe this?

It's said that whether the groundhog sees it's shadow or not determines if Spring is around the corner. The truth is, they are watching to see if the groundhog hurries back into his hole or searches for food... if he starts searching and eating then Spring is coming because this means he is ready to come out of hibernation. I think it's a cool way of determining how close Spring really is ; )

I didn't know that. Well why don't they just tell if the groundhog searched for food or not. What is the deal with the whole shadow thing?

Groundhog Day is easier for me to remember too. My son was born on groundhog day. He just turned 2. He is our little groundhog!

i think that this whole groundhog thing is a joke, think about if for a second.... if he sees his shadow there is 6 more weeks left of winter ...if he doesnt see his shadow there is six weeks left until spring... either way spring is in 6 weeks from groundhog day!!
