We have an American Cocker Spaniel and who was a gift for my sons birthday and they are best buddys. But as much as i love our dog i also suffer some allergies to his long fur so i dont get a cuddle very often. We were thinking about getting another dog as well, more like my dog, and I was thinking of getting a daschund, a miniture short haired i would say. Im just wondering if anyone who has or knows of these dogs, and your experiences as they seem to be a lovely dog but id like to be sure as i also have my son whos 3 to think about. Thankyou for your replies.

Dachshunds and children don't mix. They are extremely delicate dogs. They can break their legs just by jumping off furniture. And like most small dogs, they can be extremely nippy. They are also excitable, loud and difficult to train. They were bred to kill small animals, so they do have hunting instincts. Not a good dog for young children. If you're looking for a small, child friendly dog that won't bother allergies, I recommend a Shi Tzu or a Bichon.

As far as I know from having two they are good dogs, they are sometimes a little nippy if they feel they are going to be stepped on...as any small dog reacts. But they are very sweet dogs.
