I caught my daughter watching Tom and Jerry yesterday and I turned it right off (she's 6). Yes, I know we used to watch it "back in the day', but times have changed and if you look at it it's really violent! My kids still watch mostly preschool stuff on Noggin and Disney, but once in a while my daughter tries to turn on that Cartoon Network and soe of teh content is questionable. I also dislike Rugrats and The Fairly Oddparents,as both have quetsionable content, name calling, etc. Even PBS' Caillou has Caillou whining all the time! My favorite kids show is Littel Bear-- now that's a sweet show with simple lessons and no fighting and crying! What shows do you let your little ones watch?

I am rather strict with the tv,and how much my kids watch. My kids watch shows on Discovery Kids, Hip Hop Harry,The High 5's, Dora, Backyardigan's. I do let them watch some cartoons that I am not thrilled with, but explain to them what goes on in cartoons stays there, (No bupring or farting as a way to be funny) While there are some shows I forbid being on in my house Mr.Meaty is number one.

Thank you for your response. I have never heard of Mr. Meaty, but I don't like the sound of that title....

I think one of my ALL TIME fav shows they watched as little ones was a little 5 min type "in between shows" show called Nana Lan.....it was TOO CUTE and of course Lambchop was another fav of mine but I've been watching her since I was a kid...

OMG I love Fairly Oddparents LOL and Billy & Mandy as well as Jimmy Neutron and Invader Zim LOL my kids watch all those shows....but they are older than your little one...I've never really monitored too heavily what they watch...not now that they are older at least..so they watch horror movies with me the American Pie movies, Crank Yankers etc etc...BUT I've also always taught them the difference between real and hollywood and they knwo what is appropriate behaviour and what isnt regardless of what they watch on tv ya know...When they were little they loved shows like Caillou and Dora the Explorer but also things like Cow & Chicken and Bugs Bunny etc...

My kids pretty much watch whatever is on. My son is watching Terminator 2 with my husband right now. He is 5. My kids are 6, 5, 4 and 10 months and their favorite show is the Simpsons. They watched Anchorman with him yesterday. They mostly watch stuff on Noggin and Nick Jr in the morning. But they also love stuff like Simpsons, King of the Hill and Mythbusters. I usually keep it on one of the Discovery channels or History channels. They learn all sorts of stuff about building and wars and life in general. My 4 year old is into animals so we watch a lot of Animal Planet. She also loves the show Cops. My 5 year old is into military stuff so we watch History channel about past wars. My 6 year old likes the shows about families and made me record one on conjoined twins because she had to go to bed.

Now here is a topic I have a lot to say about. I think the contend of these shows for kids is just rediculous. I agree with you that Little Bear is a good one. I also like Seasame Street, Franklin, Blues Clues, and my older child watches a lot of Hannah Montana. I do allow my kids to watch Caillou, but have thought the same thing about him whining too much. Most people look at me like a complete dork when I tell them what I think about this topic.

I don't think it's dorky at all to monitor what your young kids watch on TV. Young minds are so impressionable, so I don't mind being the TV police if have to. I don't think a 6 year old needs to watch PG rated content, even with me in the room. I say let them be kids for a while!

Well, for me, since my kids are still very young (my elder is only 4 years old), I'll determine what he gonna watch. But boy will be boy, he normally loves to watch cartoons with cars and trucks....BoB the builder will be his top favorite now

I only let my daughter watch preschool shows and the old disney classic movies. i think that treehouse is the best channel for little kids cause all the shows are for mostly 6 and under. I love the old disney classics but i don't like the new cartoon movies that have been comming out lately. i find they have very inapropriate language and gestures for young children. for example in the ice age 2 movie, there are mountain goats that yell shut up at each other and then the echo yells shut up in the mountains and that lasts for about 5 minutes. i don't like the new movies at all.

i don't let my kids watch cartoon network they have cartoons that r too mature! but nickelodeon and disney r okay on nick tho they have fairly odd parents i don't like my kids to watch that, they r a lil too weird once the kid said 2+2 is 6 and my son believed it even after i told him it was wrong, so because he believed it so much i don't like him to watch it! but they like shows like suite life of zack and cody, hannah montana, drake and josh, lazy town, shows like that i'm okay with!

I let them watch cartoon movies than TV cartoon shows coz sometimes, they would show on TV like what you've said violence, fighting, and the likes. I let them watch Gammy bear, pooh and the tiger. Cinderella, the old tom cat and jerry, and other fairytails. Most of the cartoon shows on TV are not good for the kids anymore. For my 10 year old son i let him watch that Gundam Destiny, though it has fight scenes but theres a lesson you can get from it.

Danny Phantom has good morals and has a good clean humor - the dad is very funny! Fairly odd parents is a blast, and the Suite Life Of Zack and Cody rocks. Hannah Montana is also good. I'd adviod 'That's so Raven' and 'Phil of the future' for yougner kids. Another good one would be Scooby-Doo (not the movies, the cartoon)

My kids watch things like Dora, Diego, Wonder Pets. I can't stand Tellitubbies. That show just drives me crazy. It shows kids running around without any parents. Plus the characters don't speak at all they make baby noices. I want my kids to have good vocabulary. They do watch Handy Mandy. That show is great. It teaches them how to work together as a team. We also watch Lazy Town. We love Lazy Town. It has such wonderful lessons in it. Like about healthy foods, and being polite.

All I have to say is what did parents do in the last few generations? Everyone turned out fine watching those old cartoons. It's these new video games and newer shows that I believe is the problem. Yes, I don't think a 6 year old should be watching adult movies and shows, but cartoons are cartoons. If we shelter kids too much, how will they be when they grow up? They won't have any tolerance for cruelty or violence in the world, and will be too soft and naieve to survive. I agree, we all want what's best for our kids, but sometimes life doesn't always make it perfect.

I do not have any kids at presnt as i am single but acc to me the answer is quite obvious. i would never let my kids(when i will have them) any show that takes them in the wrong direction of the darkside of this world. any parent would do so but shows like tom and jerry are OK for kids BUT only for 1-2 hrs thatsit. no furthur if they want to see more they must do thier HW first.

My son is 13 months old. He "grew up" watching It's a Big Big world, Blue's Clues, and Wonder Pets. He only likes a few shows... He seems to like the music on those shows... :) It's really cute. We have Monsters, Inc, Finding Nemo, and 2 Winnie the Pooh movies saved on our DVR that he also likes watching... But that's about it... I wish we could afford to buy "Baby Einstein" movies. That would be nice. Although, he also seems to take an interest in us reading to him. :) It's really nice to see.

wow...your pretty strict..no offense. my thing is, if i watched it as a child, its fine for mine because i came out alright. i can't hide my children from things for the rest of their life. as long as i'm watching it with them its fine. they normally watch disney channel, cartoon network, and nick jr only in the mornings most of the day. since i'm home with them, i see everything they watch and if there is something questionable enough that they'll start immitating it, i'll stop, talk to them and then they understand that they shouldn't do it. so far its been working. my sons are 4 & 3 and i have a 18mo nephew who's here during the day. they ALL love Tom & Jerry...men you can't mess with the classics. i'd rather them enjoy their cartoons. i mean, i still do...=)

omg goodness. you have a problem with letting your kids watch shows with name calling? if you teach your kids right then you should be fine. i grew up on power rangers, and im just fine. i dont, and i never went around kicking and punching my fellow classmates because i knew better. and name calling is part of every child's life. it all begins with the parent. children mimick their parents, so as long as you, yourself set a good example then they will follow. let them be children and grow up with the fun things you had. you cant be so blind as to not realize that name calling and whineyness and violence is everywhere. its real world stuff. i honestly hope your child isnt one of those kids who cry everytime they are called "butthead" and "dumb dumb". they i have seen are the children who get mocked and made fun of more because they are such easy targets.

I think I mentioned this in another post somewhere but my son has referred to me as "the meanest mom in the world" because we don't have cable. We used to and I used to let them watch the cartoon network and ytv but then one day I sat down to watch with them... and what garbage!! I'd much rather put the $40 out and pay for the internet. We haven't had cable for 3 yrs or so. Although I'm pretty broad minded. My kids have seen movies that other people just are all "ack" when I say that my kid saw that but I watch with them and we talk and I tell them what's real and what's movie and whats right and wrong and blah blah. It's just that we usually watch it on the computer and we can then go onto the internet and we'll search for whatever the subject was and they can LEARN..
