have you had any bad side effects from birth control pills?

i was on birth control pills for many years to regulate my hormones because i was diagnosed as having polycystic ovarian syndrom (PCOS) but i visited an herbalist in january who told me that birth control pills can actually have really negative effects on your body and health. in effect, the pills were just pretending to regulate my hormones for the sake of my menstrual cycle but they werent really helping me at all with my PCOS. now im wondering if i could've saved myself years of health problems if i had just never started taking birth control pills. i cant really remember if some of the changes to my body/health happened before or after i started taking the pills.
