Billy Joel is the first singer to ever sing the anthem twice at the Super Bowl. His opinion of the national anthem ..."It's not the greatest song ever written," Joel, 57, told a group of reporters in Miami Beach this week, when asked how it is to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner. "What it represents is a terrific thing. But 'America The Beautiful' is actually a better song."Who do you consider the best or the worst person who has ever performed the national anthem. I intentionally said performed not sang.

I agree with Joel's statement--America the Beautiful is a much better song (wasn't The Star-Spangled Banner originally a poem written during the war?) and MUCH easier to sing.
I really like the late Kate Smith's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner (they still play tapes of it here at sporting events); I think the worst performance ever was probably Roseanne's 'performance'. I think the worst time/place to make any kind of statement is around the anthem and to stoop so low to make her statement at a publicly televised event with children present was a new low.

I can think of one who was horrible - Roseanne. Although, there's a trend that I hear some young singers do that I hate. They butcher the anthem by wavering their voices up and down, like they can't find the note they're supposed to sing. Drives me nutty. I don't know to explain it. I hope people know what I mean.

Roseanne was by far the worst I have ever seen.
BTW on a side note, I think I agree with Billy Joel, America the Beautiful is prettier. :0)
